David Healey is the Director of the Boston College Marching Band as well as the Boston College Symphonic Band. His talk describes his mission to successfully and consistently unite vastly diverse communities through teamwork and compassion. Dr. Healey discusses the importance of identifying differences from a young age in education and how we are conditioned to spot differences in people as well as objects. He goes on to explain the challenge that students face when integrating into a new environment and the importance of finding shared values in that environment. His work to create a new home for students inside the classroom and to support a community predicated on similarities instead of differences is incredibly important to his students. Dr. Healey’s presentation is informative and interesting and sheds light on how academic communities can become more than just places where people study, but places where they can find long lasting friendships as well.
