Resilience – a key skill in today’s Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous (VUCA) world – is not innate, it is not ingrained. Resilience is developed over a lifetime. Using a seven resilience muscles model we explore some of the latest neuroscience research and uncover surprising facts about resilience. We take a simplified look at how our wonderful complex brain works, define the roles of the Neocortex and the Amygdala, including Amygdala Hijack, and strategies to prevent Amygdala Hijack. We are complex and adaptive beings, constantly growing and evolving. I share my personal story, how I treated small hassles as exercises, actively reframed my outlook and worked on my growth to develop personal resilience and prevent my day from spiralling out of control.
