Phishing is social engineering in the cyber world. In this type of cyber attack, malicious messages distributed by all sorts of online communication media (e.g., email, SMS, social media, WhatsApp) attempt to influence internet users into an action or a change of opinion that will go against the user’s (or even society’s) best interests and will benefit the adversary. Professor Daniela Oliveira describes how she and her collaborator, Professor Natalie Ebner, discovered how people’s susceptibility to phishing varies according to age, gender, and levels of emotion and cognition. She also connects susceptibility to phishing to shortcuts our brains normally use to optimize decision making.
