From Hurricane Sandy wreaking havoc in New York City to Mangkhut nearly causing devastated flooding on both sides of the Victoria Harbour, coastal cities such as Hong Kong are particularly at risk of being hit by super typhoons as global warming intensifies. But are we ready? Can we simply rely on governments to fight climate change? Shun Chi-ming, an expert in aeronautical meteorology and former Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, warns that severe storms which used to happen once in several decades will become more destructive and more frequent. Affectionately called the “typhoon-attracting Director” by the media, Shun takes us on a journey through a collection of magnificent cloud images captured through his lens as he shares actionable ideas to help save our planet.
This talk was part of the TEDxTongChongSt COUNTDOWN. ACTION. NOW. virtual event on Oct. 15, 2020. COUNTDOWN is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world.
