A powerful form of immersive virtual reality already exists, and it’s called music education. Beethoven’s Vienna of the 1820s; front porches of depression era slums; evocative Japanese flute; 19th century Jewish wedding music in Warsaw ... Australia’s indigenous
musical traditions. What were those people feeling? Music education can have powerful long-range developmental benefits for children. It can also take them around the world and back in time, allowing them to touch the feelings and fashions of others so that one day they can better understand their own. So, where does the magic go, and what stands in the way of fulfilling this promise?
