Ameenah Gurib-Fakim: Corrections & Updates

Ameenah Gurib-Fakim was appointed president of Mauritius in 2015 and was the first woman to hold that office. Gurib-Fakim, a biologist, was also invited to be a board member of London-based charity The Planet Earth Institute in 2015. Reports surfaced in 2018 that Gurib-Fakim used a credit card issued to her by the Planet Earth Institute to purchase tens of thousands of dollars worth of clothes, jewelry and other personal items. Gurib-Fakim denied wrongdoing, reportedly saying she used the wrong card and that she had reimbursed the nonprofit for all charges. For more context, see here and here.
