28 April 1947. Thor Heyerdahl, a Norwegian anthropologist, and his team of six sailed for 101 days on a makeshift raft, setting sail on a challenging and at the same time uncertain journey. Starting in Peru, they crossed the South Pacific Ocean and, with a few stops along the way, reached their final destination... South Polynesia! Their aim was to prove that this island complex - although a mystery at the time - had significant influences from South America's culture, customs, and traditions, rather than those of Asia. Although many believed that the raft would not last even 2 weeks, the voyage was a complete success, as not only did they arrive at their destination safe and sound, but the raft bore almost no damage!

Therefore, for this year's TEDxUniversityofPiraeus, Kon-Tiki is the journey...it is the obstacles and difficulties we encountered, the route, the path to our own unique destination...a turbulent journey, but worth every minute. A journey that was to define us once and for all. To change the way we define and are defined in a sea of shoulds and shouldn't. Because after all, isn't that what we are? Runaway ships seeking our forever destination.
