TEDxYouth@HJIS is a student-led event that provides students in the HJIS community the platform to voice their opinions freely. We hope to bring to light students with stories and ideas that are yet to be heard. With the theme "Generation Z," we will reveal opinions unique to our demographic, like the roles technology and COVID-19 play in our current society. Not limited to giving speeches, this event will help organizers, attendees, and speakers better understand the context of Generation Z and the vision we share as Horizon students.

Alyssa Masuda

Student Speaker
Title: Why the number of likes means so much to Gen Z’s in Japan Description: We seek validation every day, both offline and online. Maybe this is the reason why we can’t say “no” to something we don’t want to do. The fear of rejection, and the want for approval. I will show how the coming of the digital age has made GenZ’s in Japan susceptible to validation seeking. I want to share how we can start living a life without a confirmation stamp. Estimated Time: -10 minutes

Iri Saito

Student
Title: The Rainbow in Me Description: Rainbows are seen everywhere. They show up in the skies, and give us a feeling of hope. They are used in the pride flag, and reflect the diversity of the genders and sexualities of people, and the pronouns we use. The colors in the pride flag are like the hope we have after a storm. The colors in the rainbow are different, but they still blend in together nicely, creating one big beautiful rainbow. What beautiful, unique colors do you have? I hope to share a bit of my own rainbow with you. Estimated Time: ~15 minutes

Koki Umemura

Student
Title: Anti-ing the Anti-techs (Mainly focusing on Social Media ig) Description: Tech and SNS changed our life dramatically and some people are critical about the effect it has on our daily life. Through this TED Talk, I will be explaining the benefits of using technology and social media (ranting about the stupid no-tech rule) and will be providing insight into how we can actually utilize them as ‘IB Students’. Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

We often follow trends to impress people or to be popular, it can lead us to doing or getting things that we don’t even need! but following I will talk about how taking responsibility and using devices mindfully can solve a lot of our problems! Social Media is a form of digital devices that we use a lot these days, and it is really important for us to have mindful use there, as it’s uses can have big effects on us. Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

Sait Goker

Student
Title: Racism and Gen-Z Description: Listen as.. Sait Goker discusses how racism affects gen-z. He also discusses how social media affects racism for gen-z and compares old and modern racism events. Estimated Time: 7-15 min

Title: Permanence and Impermanence in the Generational Shift Description: Imagine if you didn't have wifi in your daily life. When we were your age, we didn't have it. But to the people of my time, the "X" meant that we were the "new, cutting edge generation”. Interestingly, even though technology has developed and evolved in different forms, what humans want to do with technology has not changed so much. Estimated Time: 9 min
