In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Christine Loh

Chief Development Strategist, Institute for the Environment, HKUST
Christine’s TEDx presentation focuses on food waste, an enormous problem in the world, including in Hong Kong. This is one environmental issue where individuals and organisations have direct control over and they could significantly reduce food loss and food waste. The presentation suggests how Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong can work together to rethink and rebrand their famous food culture into a healthy and wise one that takes food waste reduction into account. Christine served as a Legislator in the years of 1992-1997 and 1998-2000. She published several environmental policy reports, such as on improving air quality; served as the CEO of Civic Exchange 2000-2012, researched and managed many policy-related reports; she served as the Undersecretary for the Environment, HKSAR Government 2012-17. Currently, Christine teaches at HKUST and also a course at the Anderson School of Management, UCLA, on nonmarket risks.

Davy Lau

Environmental Protection Officer
Davy Lau is an environmental engineer by profession with over 15 years of experience in waste and wastewater management. He has joined the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) since 2012, and his portfolios covered management of the strategic landfills, as well as policies related to waste reduction and municipal solid waste charging. He is currently working on a series of community involvement project to promote waste separation and recycling in different sectors sponsored by the Environment and Conservation Fund.

Johnson Kong

Researcher, Our Hong Kong Foundation
Johnson Kong leads the research on sustainable finance and social innovation in Our Hong Kong Foundation. He has published multiple research reports and papers that inform the strategic development of sustainable finance including ESG reporting and impact investing in Hong Kong. Dedicated to the impact sector, he is serving on the board of Hong Kong Impact Data Consortium Chain and the HKCSS committee on the Assistance Program to Improve the Living Environment of Low-income SDU Households under the Community Care Fund. He has been named a Global Shaper by the World Economic Forum. Johnson holds an M.Phil. in Development Studies with distinction from the University of Cambridge and a B.SSc. in Sociology with first class honours from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Nate Maynard

Senior Consultant, Reset Carbon
Nate Maynard is a Senior Consultant at Reset Carbon, a consultancy with a mission to help business do its part in solving the environmental crisis by making meaningful reductions in their carbon, water, and waste footprint. He hosts the podcast Waste Not Why Not, a sustainability science show with a focus on trash and green-washing. He is currently the Vice Curator of the Taipei hub of the Global Shapers Community, a youth leadership initiative of the World Economic Forum. Nate was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study coral reef economics, and previously was a Project Manager at the Ocean Recovery Alliance in Hong Kong.

Renard Siew

Advisor, GENT-GPS
Renard is Advisor to CENT-GPS, where he is responsible for advancing the organisation’s work in the field of climate change and sustainability. He is also a member of the World Economic Forum Expert Network, appointed as the Community Champion for Southeast Asia and serves as a Global Lead for the Global Shapers Climate & Environment Steering Committee. He was accepted into the Forbes Fellowship Programme in 2018 and was selected to attend the inaugural UN Climate Action Summit in New York in 2019. Renard has lectured and been appointed Industry Advisor for various universities. For his work in sustainability, he was named one of Asia’s 21 Young Leaders by Asia Society, a Young Leader by the World Cities Summit, Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians (Environmental Leadership), Malaysia's Top 10 Most Inspiring Green Warriors and was listed as a Malaysian Gen-T recipient.

Sai-Ming Lee

Senior Scientific Officer
LEE Sai-ming joined the Hong Kong Observatory as a weather forecaster. Over the years, he had also worked in a number of different areas including automatic weather station network, forecast tools development, meteorological computing system management and seasonal forecasting apart from operational weather forecasting. He took charge of the division of Climate Forecast Services and Climate Change Studies several years ago, focusing on research studies on climate change in Hong Kong, efforts to raise public awareness on climate change and its impacts, as well as research and development of long-range forecasting. He participates in various working groups and committees on climate change within the government, providing the latest information on climate change and scientific input such as climate projections to support their functions.

Sueann Lee

Engineer
Sueann is an engineer working for the Drainage Services Department (DSD) of the HKSAR Government. Sueann was trained as an environmental engineer, so she was exposed to the topic of climate change early on, in her education, and has developed a passion for climate change issues. She has worked as an environmental engineer in the earlier years of her career, and when she later switched gears to become a civil engineer, she continued to strive for climate change solutions within engineering projects. She has extensive experience in the design of drainage systems to protect our community and enhance flood resilience. Now working in DSD, she continues to work on flood management from a planning perspective. Her vision for Hong Kong is one dotted with blue-green infrastructure all over the territory, one where nature is embraced as a big part of our drainage solutions.
