In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Blake Spalding

Blake is chef/owner of Hell's Backbone Grill and Farm in Boulder, Utah, along with her friend Jen Castle. She follows Buddhist principles, with a commitment to sustainability, environmental ethics, and social and community responsibility. Blake began working in the restaurant world at an early age and at the age of sixteen moved with her family to Flagstaff, Arizona. In her twenties Blake began cooking as a river chef, mostly on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, and continued to do this for many years. She also worked for Greenpeace, during which she helped with an anti-pesticide campaign that inspired her passion for organics, sustainability, and all things biochemically and genetically unaltered. While working as a river chef, she began another career: “extreme catering”—cooking in remote, isolated locations, including a deserted island in the Bahamas and the Amazon rainforest. She also opened a catering business in Flagstaff. As a practicing Buddhist, she was often asked to cook for Tibetan lamas, and this directed her relationship with food into one fused with spirituality and meaning. In the year 2000, the opportunity to own Hell’s Backbone Grill presented itself, and she moved to Boulder with her friend in cooking, Jen Castle.

Stephen Guerin

Stephen is the inventor and CEO of Simtable, which produces interactive simulations for firefighters and communities that are projected onto physical 3D sandtables. Simtable was developed in 2009 and named one of Time Magazine's top 5 inventions in 2011 along with Apple's Siri and the Lytro camera. In the late 90s, Stephen focused his research in Cognitive Science with applications to distributed software systems. On the research front, Stephen has a windmill-vision of universal laws in self-organization, structure formation in non-equilibrium systems and living systems. He's currently chasing how primal and dual systems interact via "Least Action.” He suspects bidirectional path tracing in dual particle/field systems may be general algorithm more universal than natural selection for system evolution and symmetry breaking. Stephen's mission is to enable collective intelligence in real-world systems. Stephen lives in Santa Fe with his wife, Alison, and their two sons.
