In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Aleyna Akpinar

Student
Aleyna “Ley” Akpinar is 16 and is an exchange student this year at Shaker. She is originally from Turkey, but lives in Germany. She really enjoys performing as a dancer, singer and actor and loves and appreciates art. She got involved in the theater department and was a part of Macbeth, and is going to be in the upcoming Musical Rent as the dance captain. She is also involved with the Shaker’s show choir, the Chanticleers. She loves adventures and challenges and is not afraid to put herself out there. Apart from that, she joined Sankofa and Dance Club and is overall really engaged in her Shaker experience! During her experience as an exchange student she discovered herself and became someone who she defines as excellent. During her time in the US, she has worked hard on herself and gotten to know different sides of herself.

Halle Bauer

Educator
Halle Bauer (she/her pronouns) is an educator and an amateur history buff with an interest in modern American queer history. She is a former SHHS teacher and a Shaker alum ('06) currently living and working in New York City. She presently works as a diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant, developing curriculum to help organizations create workplace cultures where everyone can show up as their authentic selves. In her free time she enjoys reading, playing with her two cats, and learning the ukulele. Ms. Bauer has plans to advance her study of history in the coming years and to return to the classroom, where she belongs.

Keith Szalay

Educator
Dr. Keith Szalay has been teaching German at Shaker Heights High School and working as a coordinator for their exchange program with Goslar, Germany for the last 19 years. The Shaker Goslar exchange program has been recognized for excellence by both the US State Department and the German American Partnership Program. He learned to teach from his time working as a Fulbright Scholar in the Austrian School System in Spittal a.d. Drau, Austria. He earned a doctorate in education from NorthCentral University. He is married to Leslie Szalay and has three children in the Shaker Schools. As both a student and teacher he has been a part of over a dozen exchange trips and has stayed with seven different host families, many of which have become his lifelong friends.

Menachem Tenenbaum

Rabbi
Rabbi Menachem Tenenbaum is a teen educator and influencer in the Greater Cleveland area, better known by the teens as Rabbi T. Inspiring teens to live their best version of themselves is the passion he brings to work every day. Rabbi T is the Cleveland Director of NCSY, an international Jewish youth group. He facilitates Israel Culture Clubs and Jewish Student Unions in high schools around the city. He also develops engaging programs and educational experiences for the teens. Aside from his teen engagement role, he manages various chapters of NCSY throughout Michigan, Ohio and Western Pennsylvania in his capacity as the Associate Regional Director of Central East NCSY. Rabbi T starts every day as a Judaic Instructor at Fuchs Mizrachi High School. As a teenager, Rabbi T had mentors who believed in him, inspiring him to work with teenagers as well. His mission to develop teenagers to be the best version of themselves is shared by his wife Elana.

Raymond Durban

Raymond Durban is a 63 year old educator born and raised in Cleveland Ohio where he lives with his wife of 36 years, Kate and where they raised their 3 children Rae Ann, Whitney and Louis. He is in his 28th year of teaching math including 16 years at East Tech, 2 years at John Hay School of Science and Medicine and the last 8 at Shaker Heights High School. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Ohio University and a Masters Degree in Math Education. He spent 16 years in private industry working as an IT specialist for Arthur Anderson and Donn Products before starting his own Computer Consulting company name Loftworks which he operated for 7 years. He closed that company to become a teacher after being inspired by his experiences volunteering in his own children’s classrooms in Cleveland Municipal Schools. He considers urban education his lifetime ministry and passion.

Renee Sentilles

Renée M. Sentilles is the Henry Eldridge Bourne Professor of History at Case Western Reserve University where she teaches undergraduate and graduate students in American social and cultural history with an emphasis on gender, region, age, and women’s history. She is the author of Performing Menken: Adah Isaacs Menken and the Birth of American Celebrity (Cambridge, 2003) and American Tomboy, 1850-1915(University of Massachusetts Press, 2018), as well as several articles. She is currently writing a book tentatively titled On Their Feet: 150 Years of American Women’s History as Told Through Their Shoes, that uses pictures of historic shoes to get into stories of women’s history. She has lived and traveled all over the United States and now lives in Cleveland Heights, OH.

Roschelle Ogbuji

Educator
Roschelle Ogbuji is the CEO and founding partner of Cleveland based AR Innovative Solutions, a marketing firm specializing in Public Relations and Strategic Development. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Science in Political Science and Marketing communications from Depaul University in Chicago and her Masters in Theology at Liberty University. Roschelle is currently serving as the founding director of Community Chaplains and Champions in NE Ohio. As a Community Chaplain she is involved with others in the provision of holistic care within a non-religious institution and community. Prior to this she was Director for Religious Services and Volunteer for the State of Ohio Department of Youth Services where she promoted trauma informed care throughout a correctional system. Roschelle has served on many community boards in the capacity Fund Development Chair for Lifebanc of NE Ohio and its Diversity and Inclusion committee. She is currently serving on local boards of Story Forum.

Silver Barker

Student
Silver Barker is a senior at Shaker Heights High School. She is very involved in activities regarding the entertainment industry. She is a dancer, model, and actress. Silver had attended two different dance academies: Cleveland Dance and Shaker Dance. She has modeled for four years and is signed with two current modeling agencies including one located in New York City. She has also acted for four years as well at many different acting school. She is as well involved in activities with her high school. She is in a group called SGORR which is a group of high school students who focus on race relations in society. In the future, Silver plans on starting her career by studying communications and further advancing in her current activities.

Zach Lehner

Student
Zach Lehner is a junior at Shaker Heights High School. Zach is in the IB Diploma Programme and is very involved in extracurriculars. He wrestles, is the treasurer of Model United Nations and a CORE leader in SGORR. Zach is also active within the theater department and was featured in the school’s production of Macbeth earlier this year. Recently, Zach also took part in Shaker’s St. Baldrick's fundraiser and shaved his head! Zach has a brother, Jake, who is a freshman at Tulane University and a sister, Scarlett who is in 5th grade at Woodbury. Zach loves to travel the world and his favorite country he has been to is Tanzania. If Zach could travel anywhere in the world, he would love to go to Cambodia and he also plans to go to Japan later this year with the school. Zach would like to thank his TEDx team, Maggie and Caitlyn, for their help, and his family for all of their support.
