Theme: The Name They Put On Me

This year the TEDx HKBU 2016 team would like to explore with our speakers and audience is 'The Name They Put on Me'.

As the theme conveys, the speakers would begin with their titles or the names others have been using to address them, then leading our audience, as well as the global TEDx audience, through their journeys of identity construction. Such direction bears the hope of displaying and addressing the mix-and-match between the titles and how the speakers may want to position his-/ herself.

For instance, they would touch on issues such as whether or not i) the titles bring privileges or respects the speakers enjoy, ii) the titles bring pressure on the speakers/ restrain them as to what are expected from them, and of course, iii) suggestions speaker may have for our audience in how we may take the so many names others try to put on us!

Alex Wang

As the pioneer who has been awarded titles of “super teacher” 、“power teacher” and”Excellent teacher of 2014” in the education industry in Taiwan, Mr. Wang was not being complacent by the fame, and he continued to enlighten either the underprivileged children in rural areas or teachers in Taiwan by his unique ‘MAPS’ teaching method and oral communication. The “MAPS” teaching method he proposed has proved to be successful for enhancing students’ abilities in learning. He bent on the aspiration of becoming a teacher due to the inspirational lessons delivered by his three teachers, who illuminated him in his dark period. His ardour kept increasing that he was eager to carry the children to the luminous future. By teaching in one of the poorest rural area in Taiwan for over 17 years, his dedications and achievements have been extensively recognized and promoted.

Cheung Po Wah

With splendid experiences in the media industry, Sharon Cheung achieves far more than essentials as a journalist with appreciations from various authorities including Journalistic Award Committee of School of Journalism and Commuication of CUHK , JCI City Lady and Chevening. After her graduation from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Oxford, where she was the fellow at Reuter’s Institute, she then served and reported for the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong Cable Television News and Radio Television Hong Kong. Well-known after interviewing speakers from different fields, she enriched herself afterwards through exploring numerous applaudable identities like the senior vice president of media and entertainment conglomerate Media Asia,　columnist at HKEJ, published author of East Meets West: a Cultural Diary of Life at Oxford and lecturer at the University of Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Hiutung Ng

The strong passion for the marvelous journey as a journalist began to bloom since Mr. Ng Hiu-tung was still in high school. Apart from his 15-year journalist tenure in TVB, he has also worked for Hong Kong Daily News, Wah Kiu Yat Bo and the South China Morning Post. With his profound knowledge and understanding in the media industry, he joined the Cable TV News team and bases in China as its Beijing Correspondent. Driven by his pursuit of excellence, Ng has won numerous international journalism awards, including the RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award, New York Film Festival Gold Award and the Human Rights Award.

John Wakefield

Dr. John Wakefield studied for his BA in America, where he was born and raised, and completed both his MA and PhD in Hong Kong. Long ago leaving his birthplace and homeland, John has lived in Hong Kong for nearly three decades. His mother tongue is English, but he is highly proficient in Cantonese, which is one of the most challenging languages to master. John's bilingual background has facilitated his research in contrasting various aspects of English and Cantonese. John refuses to be bound by his ethnicity. Despite his Westerner appearance, he identifies himself as a Hong Konger and hopes that someday the commonly held notion of “Hong Konger” will be expanded to include non-Chinese ethnicities. His identifying as a white Hong Konger, and his attempt to assimilate into the Hong Kong speech community, has resulted in a number of unique challenges and interesting experiences that are worth sharing.

Neo Yau

Yau Hawk-Sau, Neo is a Hong Kong-based actor. He founded a political satire group called “Mocking Jer” specialised in creative derivative work which criticizes local news and government. In 2015, he acted as the main character Pang Shing-Wa in “She Remembers, He Forgets”, he gained reputation after the film is shown.

Stephanie Au

Being the youngest swimmer ever representing Hong Kong in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Stephanie Au is definitely a phenomenon under the flashlights. At just 16 years old, Stephanie was thrust onto one of the world’s most glorious stages for athletes, representing Hong Kong at the 2008 Summer Olympics. This 24th Hong Kong Outstanding Students Awards winner chooses to continue her pursuit as an athlete without dilapidating her past as a student at a traditional girls’ school - Scared Heart Canossian College. And as a graduate of the University of California Berkeley, she demonstrated a nice balance between academic and athletic pursuits. Through mentoring and inspiring young sportsmen in Hong Kong, she endeavours to rejuvenate the sports field with constructive incentives and efficacious support.

Tommy Leung

Tommy Leung is one of the most subscribed Hong Kong Youtubers. His sense of humour and sensitivity for social phenomenon gained him and his channel popularity and recognition. Despite being an Economics student at York University in Canada, he has devoted himself in the media industry - not only has he worked in a TV broadcast station, but he has also worked as a voiceover, reporter, news editor, etc. While Mr Leung was working as an intern in the TV station, his interest in starting a Youtube channel has begun to sprout. His liveliness and passion for performing have definitely contributed to his aspiration in becoming a movie director or a producer. Leaving his job in the TV station, he made a debut on Youtube with the short video <Be More Narcissistic Every Day>, which was well-received across the city. At the same time, Mr Leung values the constructive comments and criticisms given by his audience.

Vriko Kwok

Vriko Séraphina Kwok is the Founder & Creative Director of Poupée de Papier, a rising handbag label. After graduating from Hong Kong Baptist University & University of Bergen, she went on to pursue her passion in leather design, and eventually founded the brand in Paris. 10,000+ handbags have been sold to over 30 countries in less than a year, Poupée de Papier has also received a long list of celebrity & model endorsements. Outside of work, Vriko is a travel enthusiast and has been to over 50 countries. “The standard of beauty is often unified, but when you travel, the world tells you a different story: The beauty of diversity. That, is something I want women to celebrate.” She incorporates this belief in (the colourful designs of) Poupée de Papier, and hopefully inspires more women to enjoy a fun & colourful life.
