In 2003 Jackie Sumell asked Herman Wallace, a prisoner in long-term solitary confinement, "what kind of house does a man who has been in solitary confinement for 30 years dream of?" From this question came the idea for Herman's House, an exhibition of the designs Herman created for his own home, a replica of the cell in which he spent his days and the realities of solitary confinement.
