In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Anne Hallward

Dr. Anne is a Board certified psychiatrist in Portland, Maine. She trained at Harvard Medical School, where she also served on the faculty, teaching at Cambridge Hospital, before moving to Maine. She designed and taught classes on sexuality, death and dying, mental illness and cultural competence. Her interest in creating space for open conversation about difficult subjects began in her teens when she noticed that very few adults seemed to be talking about intimate or difficult subjects. She started Safe Space Radio in 2008 to reduce stigma and offer hope, because each person who dares to tell a vulnerable story contributes to a safer culture for everyone.

Chas Lester

Chas Lester is a beatboxer, singer, drummer, percussionist, and arranger, and has been a professional musician in New England for thirteen years. He is an instructor and coordinator for The Maine Academy of Modern Music and through which has partnered with Learning Works, Breakwater Middle, Spurwink and others. Chas has a sincere interest in using music as vehicle for joy, education and human connection. He’s a member of several musical groups in the Portland area: The Fogcutters, Sorcha and the Clearing, and the Pete Miller Band to name a few. Chas has a BA in Jazz and Contemporary Vocal Performance from The University of Maine at Augusta.

Tom and Peter Campbell

Cape Elizabeth High School (Maine) graduates Tom & Peter Campbell are emerging filmmakers who write, act, direct and produce short films and documentaries. Their film The Contractors won five awards at The 48 Hour Film Project in Portland—top prizes for best directing, cinematography, special effects, editing, and audience favorite. They are currently at work on a documentary for Cape Elizabeth’s 250th anniversary.

Kate Breed

Kate Breed is a junior at Cape Elizabeth High School, where she participates in varsity soccer and basketball. She has three older brothers, and her favorite activities are traveling and exploring new places. Kate is someone you probably remember from our middle school talent show when she improvised for the entire three minutes and thirtyeight seconds of Chris Brown’s “Freeze.” She started dancing when she was in elementary school, studied at Casco Bay Movers during middle school, and is still dancing today. She’s not shy about admitting to dancing alone in her bedroom and performed some spectacular solos in the locker room before Cape Elizabeth Girls Soccer games this Fall.

Mohamed Nur

Mohamed Nur, a native of Portland, is currently a senior at Deering High School. He is the President of his class senate, Model UN, and Co-president of the Environmental Club. He is a Maine Seed for the Seeds of Peace Organization and a King Fellow for the NAACP. His parents are Somali refugees, so he is adept at living between two worlds. He also has a younger sister. Mohammed feels passionate about many things—mostly about making change in the world.

Kate Hansen

Kate Hansen is a junior at Cape Elizabeth High School. She has grown up with a love for writing, and won the 2014 Scholastic American Voices Award for Maine. She will read almost anything that is offered to her, except science textbooks. Besides writing and reading, Kate has been playing violin in orchestras since she was eleven years old. Kate will read what she calls a “lighthearted essay describing the relationship between the first and second violin sections of an orchestra.”

David Kallin

David Kallin is a husband and father of two who believes in the importance of outdoor adventure as a family activity. The Kallin family (with two young kids) has a long history of human-powered outdoor adventures, including multiday backpacking, biking, and cross country skiing trips. A former oceanographer, David now practices law as an attorney at the Portland, Maine law firm Drummond Woodsum with a focus on natural resource, land conservation and municipal law. David will be speaking about his family’s most recent adventure: a five month end-to-end hike of the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain in Georgia, to Mount Katahdin in Maine.

Genevieve Morgan

Genevieve Morgan is a writer and editor living in Portland, ME. She has authored several illustrated non-fiction works, as well as written or contributed to various published books for corporate clients, among them Borders, Williams-Sonoma, Starbucks, Smith & Hawken, and Gymboree. Her most recent work is Undecided: Navigating Life and Learning after High School (Zest Books 2014) and The Fog of Forgetting (Islandport Press/2014), book one in her new adventure-fantasy trilogy, The Five Stones. She is also the host of the cable interview TV show, Between the Lines. The second volume of the trilogy, Chantarelle, will be released in 2015.

Improv Group

The IMPROV group is part of the Theatre program at CEHS. It started about ten years ago with the help of Tim Farrell and is now student-led, under the supervision of Mr. Mullen, and comes out of the woodwork to perform in the student-managed shows, such as TAKE 5 last month. Today’s performers are Ryan Wallace, Andrew Harrington, George Astor, and Ethan Nestor-Darling. The idea of improv is audience interactive: a few actors will go onstage, solicit suggestions from the audience, and then create a completely unscripted scene which, with some talent and luck, turns into comedy gold.

Maine Marimba Ensemble

Maine Marimba Ensemble performs captivating complex poly-rhythmic arrangements of traditional and contemporary Zimbabwean music on their spectacular set of homemade marimbas. Their joyous dance music is amazing and not to be missed.

Thom Pollard

Thom Pollard has won many international awards including an Emmy Award (Orphan Orca: PBS/Regional Emmy) nominated for a CINE Golden Eagle (Lost on Everest: BBC/PBS Nova). Thom travels the country as a keynote speaker for events, schools and corporations. He uses his adventure photography, paired with his 20+ years of mountaineering and exploration experience, as a backdrop for his motivational themes. Thom is the creative Director at Eyes Open Productions, a full service production company that emphasizes the power of collaborative creativity for success. One of his proudest accomplishments is creating a Pop Warner Football program for his son to continue playing quarterback in middle school.

Lauren Sullivan

In the spring of 2004, Lauren, with the help of some friends, chased the Barenaked Ladies’/Alanis Morissette “Au Naturale” tour back and forth across the country… and so REVERB’s days of green touring and education began. Today Lauren works on many of the organizational elements that keep REVERB chugging: strategic planning, financial oversight and development, governance and legal, with some biodiesel coordination thrown in for good measure. Lauren earned a B.A. in Social Psychology and Spanish from Tufts University and an M.S. in Environmental Education from the Audubon Expedition Institute at Lesley University. Lauren has worked as a campaigner with the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco, and in Brooklyn, NY with Partnerships for Parks helping communities to advocate for and re-claim their parks, gardens and green spaces.

Eva Miele & Marcus Donnelly

Eva Miele and Marcus Donnelly are both juniors at Cape Elizabeth High School. Eva has been singing since she can remember and got serious about her talent when she joined “Musica de Filia” in the second grade. If you’ve ever walked the halls of CEHS, you’ve heard Eva. She tested her middle school teachers with incessant humming and singing. Marcus started playing guitar six years ago, and his favorite song to play is “Going to California” by Led Zeppelin. The two joined forces freshman year and have been recording songs for Eva’s Soundcloud account ever since.

Tim Ferrell

Award winning comedy writer/director Tim Ferrell has written and produced programs for Nickelodeon & HBO’s Comedy Central. With over 25 years experience writing, directing and performing comedy, Ferrell has taught workshops on stand-up and improvisational comedy across the country. Former students include Jon Stewart, Ray Romano and Chris Rock.

Hunter Kent

Hunter is a senior at Cape Elizabeth High School. She has a profound passion for helping others. After a long journey to find inner peace and happiness, she aspires to share her internal love with the rest of the world. She is proud of her involvement and leadership in the Natural Helpers program. She also enjoys creative writing, art and photography, and her time as a member of the GSTA. Outside of school, Hunter finds happiness in hiking and camping, climbing mountains with friends, reading and writing, and documenting her journey of recovery on Instagram. After graduation, she is considering going to school to learn how to facilitate Wilderness Therapy and to study Adventure Education and Environmental Studies.
