In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Michael Long

SARASOTA - It is hard to pinpoint the exact moment that Michael Long became a maverick. It might have been when the 20-year-old New College student traded in his car for a small sailboat, where he now sleeps at night. Or it could have been a few years back, after he was arrested on low-level drug and theft crimes, but then entered a juvenile justice rehab program and was chosen from 100,000 Florida children as the agency's "Youth Success of the Year." But most likely, he achieved true maverick status earlier this month, when — as the student representative on the Florida Board of Governors that oversees the state university system — Long took on one of the state's most powerful politicians in public. And, some observers say, the second-year student verbally out-maneuvered the lawmaker.
