Julio Friedmann is a leading expert on carbon capture, utilization and storage.

Why you should listen

As chief scientist at Carbon Direct, Julio Friedmann helps the firm reduce, remove and utilize companies' emissions through science and commerce. During the Obama administration, he served as principal deputy assistant secretary for the Office of Fossil Energy at the Department of Energy, where he ran research on advanced fossil energy systems, carbon capture and storage and CO2 utilization. Friedmann was also formally chief energy technologist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and senior research scholar at Columbia University's Center on Global Energy Policy.

Friedmann has authored or co-authored more than 130 scientific articles, including some in Science and Nature, and has spoken on numerous podcasts. He has been published in The Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The New York Times and The Washington Post. In addition to his partnerships in the private and nonprofit sectors, Friedmann has testified before the US Congress and many state legislatures and has worked with the US State Department, the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Treasury. He continues to investigate how to rapidly reduce and remove greenhouse gas emissions.
