The first TEDx event of the island of Crete aims to highlight the Crossroads of our times: to reflect upon the new directions and the transitions ahead. To seek the possible selections and point to the Crossroads to go beyond.

Aleco Christakis

Alexander N. Christakis, co-founder of the Club of Rome and former faculty member of several prominent Universities, around the world. Notable for his work on the field of structured dialogic design, Dr.Christakis is dedicated to the evolution of civic participation and democratic decision-making.

Panayiota Poirazi

Research Director at the Computational Biology Laboratory at the IMBB, at the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH). Has been honored with several awards for her scientific contributions in brain modeling.

Stylianos Papardelas

Stylianos Papardelas is a street photographer wandering around the world to capture different cultures with his unique digital sight. His photographs have been repeatedly selected to be published in National Geographic, Huffington Post and several other prestigious mass media

Gareth Owens

Gareth Owens has studied Classics & Ancient History at UCL, and has received a Phd from EKPA on the Structure of the Minoan Language. For the last 5 years, he focuses on the Enigma of the Phaistos Disk. «We can now ‘read’ and ‘hear’ 90% of the Disk. This is what I would dearly like to share with TEDx».

Elena Paravantes

Elena Paravantes is a Nutritionist and Writer specializing in the Mediterranean Diet. Upon receiving her degrees from the University of Illinois, Elena started her career as a clinical nutritionist consulting patients on their lifestyle, incorporating components of the Greek diet. She has been active in the field of food and nutrition as a clinical nutritionist, consultant and lecturer, including -among others- the following institutions: the American College of Greece, the Lambraki Research Foundation, Routes of the Olive Tree, Loyola University, Aramark, American Overseas Dietetic Association, European Federation of the Association of Dietitians. As a recognized expert, her articles have appeared in many publications, including the Huffington Post and the Olive Oil Times.

Vassilis Nikolopoulos

Vassilis Nikolopoulos is the CEO and co-founder of Intelen, Inc a New York-based emerging early stage cleantech company. He is an active entrepreneur, innovator and passionate with technology futurology and trend forecasting, who managed to transform his PhD research into a global innovative product.

Nena Galanidou

Nena Galanidou is an Associate Professor of Archaeology at the University of Crete. She Investigates the Stone Age, the early period of human history before the conquest of writing, during of which the stone was the main construction material of gear.

Vaggelis Mallios

Dr. Vaggelis Mallios is one of the lawyers that achieved the recognition of same-sex couples’ right to be included in the civil union in Greek legal system.Greece was convicted by the European Court of Human Rights for originally excluding homosexual couples from the agreement.

Daulute Trio

Daulute brings a unique and dynamic sound to the interpretation of Greek traditional music. It presents an extensive Cretan repertoire as a basis, while it also explores other Greek music idioms and improvisations. Motivated by their common love and respect for Greek music, the musicians endeavour to develop an alternative world music sound.

Stelios Petrakis Yiorgos Manolakis

Stelios Petrakis and Yiorgos Manolakis perform an interpretation of Cretan traditional music, combined with traditional instruments and elements from around the Mediterranean basin – portraying the character of a proper crossroad of civilizations and music.

Giorgos Tserpes

Giorgos Tserpes is Research Director at the Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters of the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR). His research interests are focusing in the fields of Biology, Ecology and Population Dynamics of marine fish with special emphasis on large migratory species, such as tunas and swordfish.

Ross Daly

Born in England, spent many years of his life around the world and eventually settled in Crete to create and spread his music. Ross Daly, one of the most emblematic figures of contemporary Crete, is going to be on the stage of TEDxHeraklion.
