About this event

The theme for TEDxWilliamsport – “Breaking Through” enables our Speakers to address:
the ways they have experienced breakthroughs;
significant breakthroughs that shaped our culture, history, art, etc.;
a breakthrough that went virtually unnoticed:
future breakthroughs they anticipate, etc.
Perhaps addressing questions such as:
Are we at or approaching a breakthrough?
And if so, where?
If not, do we see one coming?

  • Bill Kelly
    Bill Kelly’s commitment to community service through broadcasting has resulted in several influential, locally produced television and radio programs, including series and documentaries. Kelly keeps his journalism skills honed by Executive-Producing and hosting WVIA’s award-winning State of Pennsylvania programs as well as the station’s acclaimed Northeast Pennsylvania Business Journal series. His interest in broadcasting began at age 12 with a homemade plywood control board he and his friends made and operated in the basement of his Towanda home. Hired two years later by his hometown radio station WTTC, on-air, news, sales and management roles followed. Eight stations in two states came quickly, culminating at the then powerhouse Number One Top-40 WARM Radio in Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, where he also volunteered for the local PBS television station. His flair for public relations, and a passion for using broadcasting for public service, led WVIA PBS Channel 44 and WVIA NPR FM 89.9 to offer Kelly a job as fundraiser, the opportunity that became a career. Kelly has served as trustee of several regional organizations, including CMC Hospital and the Cultural Center, both in Scranton; the FM Kirby Center, the Sordoni Foundation, Hospice of the Sacred Heart and Children’s Service Center, all Wilkes Barre, and the President’s Advisory Council of Keystone College, LaPlume. He is past Chairman of Bloomsburg University’s Board of Trustees and was an adjunct faculty member for over a decade. Breaking Through is a way of life for Bill Kelly and we look forward with great anticipation to his TEDxWilliamsport Talk.

He is the founder of the society’s Tanks in Schools program that places reef aquariums in educational settings throughout Pennsylvania. The network of aquariums has grown to over 20 tanks in eleven very diverse school settings. His work has successfully demonstrated how to create sustainable reef aquariums for science education with zero direct impact on currently existing reefs through captive coral propagation, live rock seeding and fish breeding. The program aims to teach students and the public about coral reef ecology and conservation and how every human impacts the environment in these “rainforests of the sea.” The diverse chemicals and biological interactions in a reef aquarium can be used as the centerpiece of exciting and engaging biology education. Our society plans to deliver this approach to science education in more classrooms around the nation. Larry holds a B.S.Ed. in Secondary Education with concentrations in Physics and Chemistry as well as a M.Ed. from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania.
