In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Mark Bennett

Founder, ISchool Zambia

Mark Bennett founded AfriConnect in 1996 in response to developing ICT requirements across the African continent. He is also Founder and Director of 'iSchool Zambia', which is introducing eLearning into schools. iSchool Zambia is currently developing online content for all lessons from Grade 1 to 12, including teaching plans and resources, and trialling in a range of schools, ready for wide-scale deployment, in Zambia and regionally, from 2013.

Musa Kalenga

Musa Kalenga is probably what Kwame Nkrumah had in mind when Ghana first won its freedom. In fact, much of this great African leader’s wisdom has inspired Musa to become the man he’s busy becoming: a visionary young African who believes the continent’s finest hour will come when each person is empowered to live out their purpose – a goal he’s personally committed to. To this end Musa, as a seasoned communicator, strives to inspire fellow young Africans in particular through his talks and writings; his passion for communication finding its finest expression in topics surrounding youth development and Africa’s advancement. His keen insights into the youth led to the establishment of Monatefellaz, a marketing and research consultancy specialising in young consumers. Hailed as a marketing fundi by Sunday World newspaper, Musa has received much acclaim for his work, including an unprecedented three nominations for the prestigious Black Business Quarterly (BBQ) Awards in 2008

Sara Longwe

Gender Activist,

Ms Longwe came to fame in the 1970’s. What started as a challenge to the Ministry of Education policy on dress code and maternity leave grew to her becoming a formidable force in the women’s movement in Zambia and in the region. In the courts of law Ms Longwe set precedence in the case of “Longwe verses Hotel intercontinental “. She challenged the discriminatory position of the hotel group on withholding admittance of single women to their hotel establishment, and won. Her biggest footprint is the “Patriarchal Hotpot” a framework to understand patriarchy and a five stage empowerment framework to truly free subjugated women from patriarchy. Later works include addressing defilement in schools and communities, where teachers accused and convicted of defilement were not discharged from service by the Ministry of Education.

Wala Chabala

Dr E D Wala Chabala was Chief Executive Officer of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Zambia until end of 2014. With the mandate to supervise and develop the Capital Markets of Zambia, Dr Chabala had to call on all his Financial Services experience, strategy and change leadership background to effect transformation in the Zambian Capital Markets. Dr Chabala is a talented and skilled Business Executive with prior experience gained in a FTSE-100 financial services company and a top global strategy consulting firm. He has previously consulted to a large Financial Services company, developed strategy for a new Development Finance entity, developed strategy and business plan for a Drug Discovery and Development entity, and advised medium size construction company on strategy for getting into new markets in Sub-Saharan Africa. Dr Chabala writes regularly for one of the daily newspapers in Zambia on economic issues.
