In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Filoi tou Vithou

Non Profit Organisation dedicated to the protection and preservation of the sea and marine environment.
The club was founded in 1994 by a group of Chanians, friends of the sea and marine environment. The club's purpose is to promote ecological consciousness and respect for the protection and preservation of the marine ecosystem, and to demonstrate the natural beauty of our area. Its activities include lectures, public dialog, phtotographic exhibitions, movie shows, diving excursions, article publication in the media and competitions, often in collaboration with local authorities. The club has currently 150 registered members, most of them certicied divers with an acute sense of appreciation for the sea.

Esai en Roi

Eleni Kavazidou

Born in 1974 in Germany. She graduated from the Department of Physical Education of Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki and from the Dance School of Higher Education for Professionals of the Thessalonikis’ Dance Art Center. She has a Certificate Degree from the Contemporary Music School of Thessaloniki - Jazz Department and a Master of Science Degree in therapeutic physical exercise. She is a PhD candidate, specialized in Dance/Movement Therapy. In 1998 founded with three other artists (Sobotis A, Athanasiadou E, Troizi M) the Esai en Roi Company where until now teaches dance and choreographs. She is activated in the era of academic dance research since 1999. She has written many dance-articles for a local newspaper of Panorama, named “Ta Nea” and much later, for the Cineek e-Magazine of Alternative Culture.

Georgios Kalarrytis

Ο Γιώργος Καλαρρύτης είναι ιδρυτικός επιστημονικός συνυπεύθυνος του «Λόγω Ψυχής», Ινστιτούτο Εκπαίδευσης και Έρευνας στη Συστημική Ψυχοθεραπεία (www.logopsychis.gr), το οποίο, μεταξύ άλλων, εκπαιδεύει και εποπτεύει επαγγελματίες ψυχικής υγείας σε μια εμπλουτισμένη μορφή της συστημικής θεραπείας SANE – System Attachment Narrative Encephalon (Σύστημα, Συναισθηματικός Δεσμός, Αφήγηση, Εγκέφαλος). Εργάζεται ιδιωτικά στο Μαρούσι ως κλινικός ψυχολόγος, ψυχοθεραπευτής, θεραπευτής οικογένειας-ζεύγους και σύμβουλος εξαρτήσεων. Έκανε βασικές σπουδές ψυχολογίας στην Ελλάδα και μεταπτυχιακές κλινικής ψυχολογίας στην Αγγλία. Ειδικεύτηκε στη συστημική ψυχοθεραπεία, στη θεραπεία οικογένειας, στην ψυχολογική διάγνωση και έχει παρακολουθήσει εξειδικευμένη εκπαίδευση στη θεραπεία των ουσιοεξαρτήσεων, στο ψυχόδραμα και στην κινητοποιητική συνέντευξη.

Georgios Kapelakis

Georgios Kapelakis was born on November 26, 1973 in Heraklion, Crete and lives in Ano Asites. He studied Tourism Professions.He is quadriplegic after an accident and for his movements he uses a wheelchair. While recovering after his accident, initially he started swimming. Yiorgos/George is an athlete at the Sports Association "Megalonissos" and at S2 category. The first major event in which he was discriminated were the Paraolympic Games, held in Athens, where he won the Bronze medal in the 50m backstroke. In 2007 at the International Sports Meeting of Athletics and Swimming in Rio de Janeiro, he won the Gold medal in category 100 meter freestyle. At the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing she won four medals. A Gold in the category of 50 meters freestyle, a Silver category 100 meter freestyle and a bronze in the 200 meters in the same category and in the 50 meters backstroke.In 2009 he voted by sports journalists in Greece as a top athlete with a disability.

Kiagias Manolis

Emmanouil Kiagias graduated from the Electronics Engineering Department of the Technical Education Institute of Chania and got his MSc in Software Systems Technology from the University of Sheffield. He worked in many schools as Informatics Teacher and also as the school’s technical support/system and network administrator. He wrote many articles as “The Aiolos Project: Creating the Educational Secondary School Super-computer cluster” “Installing and Using Compiz Fusion”, “Implementing UFS Journaling on a Desktop PC” and “An XDMCP FreeBSD Based School Lab: Using a FreeBSD XDMCP server and old PCs as X Terminals” and also publications and e-books such as the “Python Game Programming”.

Architect-Engineer, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) (1994). PhD in Architectural Studies and Building Technology, AUTh (2009). Visiting Research Associate, Harvard GSD (2004-2006), collaborating with Harvard FAS, MIT Media Lab και MIT CSAIL. Adjunct Professor, Department of Architecture, AUTh (2006-2009). Adjunct Professor, Department of Architecture, Technical University of Crete (2008-2011). Assistant Professor, School of Architecture, TUC (2012 – today). Director of the Transformable and Intelligent Environments Laboratory (TIE Lab), School of Architecture, TUC (2011 – today). In 2008 he received the Europe 40 under 40 Architecture Award and in 2014 he received the Silver Award at the International Design Awards. Currently he holds a consultant’ s position at the 124|SKG Architects Research and Design Office, as well as at the start-up Sensar.

Merja Tuominen – Gialitaki

Merja Tuominen – Gialitakis was born in Finland. She came in Crete in 1981 where she found a magical beauty. She fell in love with a Cretan man and with him, she fell in love with Crete, and ever since she is trying to make her countrymen love the island the same way. Having lived in many places in Europe, in Crete she finally found an unsurpassed combination of beauty, tradition and… flavors.

Minos Garofalakis

Garofalakis Minos is a Computer Science Professor at the School of ECE of the Technical University of Crete in Chania and the Director of the Software Technology and Network Applications Laboratory (SoftNet). He works in the broad area of "Big Data Analytics", including (centralized and distributed) data stream processing, probabilistic data management, approximate query processing, network data management, data mining, and XML/text databases.He worked as a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs, as a Senior Research Scientist at Intel Research Berkeley and as a Principal Research Scientist at Yahoo! Research. He held an Adjunct Associate Professor position at the EECS Department of the University of California, Berkeley.He is an ACM Distinguished Scientist, a Member of the IEEE and a recipient of the IEEE ICDE'2009 Best Paper Award, the Bell Labs President's Gold Award and the Bell Labs Teamwork Award.databases.

Nikolaos Theodorakis

Lawyer + Lecturer at the Oxford University
Nikolaos Theodorakis is a Lecturer at the Oxford University, Junior Research Fellow at Pembroke College, and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Kellogg College. His research agenda currently spans across three pillars: different forms of Financial Crime and how they intertwine with International Development; effective regulatory regimes for banking institutions and corporations; and relevant compliance strategies pertaining to International Trade and Competition Law. Nikolaos has further worked for the U.S. Committee on Capital Markets Regulation, the Legislative Committee at the U.S. Congress and the Library of Congress, and the UK Sentencing Council. Nikolaos has received fellowships and awards from the ESRC, the British Academy, the Greek Parliament, the Greek State Scholarships Foundation, the EU Bursaries and the Corfield foundation, among others.

Polychronis Koutsakis

Professor and Researcher on Computer Communication Networks + Author + Playwright + Poet
Polychronis Koutsakis was born in 1974 in the city of Chania, Greece. He has two jobs, which he equally loves: one has to do with research and teaching on Computer Communication Networks, and the other is writing novels and plays. He has been honored twice with the National Playwriting Award from the Greek Ministry of Culture. His theatrical works have been played and awarded in New York and other cities in America, England and Greece. He has written 16 books: 9 novels and a collection of poems issued in Greece and 6 plays, which have been published in Canada. His research work has resulted in about 100 international publications and a patent that has been licensed in the United States and acquired by Blackberry Limited Company.

Triantafyllos Ksilouris

World record for a theorem on prime numbers. Phd in prime numbers. Developer of Quizdom app. He was born in 1985 in Bonn Germany. He studied Mathematics at the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University with which he also cooperated for his Phd. His interests are Technology and Informatics. He is the developer of Quizdom, an extremely widespread application. One proof of the success of this app is the fact that there were days when the downloads of Quizdom exceeded the ones on Facebook or Twitter.

Vasileios Kiosses

Vassilios Kiosses was born in Kastoria. He graduated from the Psychology Department of the University of Crete, in Rethymno. After he completed three years of graduate studies in Person-Focused Counselling.Since 2013, he is a PhD candidate in the Medical School of the University of Ioannina. The subject of his thesis was the training of the Medical School students and Health professionals , in Empathy. He is the inspirer and the trainer of “Empathize with me Doctor”, an innovative experiential program which educates Medical School students in Empathy, lasting 60 hours, a unique targeted program in Europe. Following these encouraging results from this training program, he started teaching the course "Empathy in doctor’s – patient’s relationship" at the Medical School in Ioannina. Since 2013, he is also Abuse Counselor at the Advisory Center of Female Violence Victims at the Municipality of Kastoria.

Vasilis Samoladas

The club was founded in 1994 by a group of Chanians, who adore the sea and marine environment. The purpose of this club is to develop ecological consciousness in order to protect and preserve the marine ecosystem and also, to promote the natural beauty of the area. Their activities include lectures, public dialog, photographic exhibitions, movie shows, diving excursions, article publication in the media and competitions, usually in collaboration with the local authorities. The club has currently 150 registered members, most of them certified divers with an acute sense of appreciation for the sea. The earliest major activity was a series of symbolic garbage collection efforts of the seabed in ports around Crete. They have participated in search and rescue operations and they have organized campaigns in isolated islands in order to inform the local people about the destruction caused by dynamite fishing. Their goal is the vision of “sea of beauty and life”.

Παναγιώτης Πιτσίνιαγκας

Panagiotis was born in Athens in 1977. He studied at the National Technical University of Athens and at the University of Patras. He has incomplete quadriplegia due to spinal cord injury after a car accident. He is an motivational speaker and moderator at the Association of Social Responsibility for Children and Youth (SKEP). Its aim is to familiarize the public with the image of disability by connecting people with physical, sensory or mental disabilities and primary and secondary school students. Panagiotis is a volunteer’s instructor of the accessibility team at the University of Athens where he is showing techniques to those who escort people in wheelchairs, also a player of the National Team of Rugby in wheelchairs and a member of the steering group of TEDxAthens.
