Simon Berrow is a marine biologist dedicated to studying and preserving the basking shark.
Born in Ireland, Simon Berrow has travelled the world's oceans studying albatrosses, seals, penguins, sharks, and more. A passionate scientist and lover of Ireland's natural heritage, he founded the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group and the Irish Basking Shark Study Group.
He is also the inventor of "Simon's shark slime sampling system" -- a mop handle and oven cleaner -- which has proved to be the most effective way of collecting shark DNA for analysis.
The TEDxTalk was filmed at the Science Gallery in Dublin.
“It's been suggested that basking sharks would make fantastic indicators of climate change, because they're basically continuous plankton recorders swimming around with their mouth open.”
“I'm a field person. I get panic attacks if I have to spend too many hours in a lab with a white coat on.”
“[Discoveries] are sent to you in strange ways. Grab them while you can. I'll take that as my scientific legacy.”
