Ralf Mayenberger

TCK parent and researcher
Many Expat stories start with an interesting twist. I am one of these stories. I came to China 10 years ago; the plan was to stay for one. I am still here. Even weirder, I was an unplanned side project of an interdisciplinary waste water project between my universities in Germany and China. I met my wife in China, also an expat; she’s from the Philippines, I’m from Germany. We married in Hong Kong and work at international schools in Beijing. Our children are born in China and go to an international school. These circumstances got me interested in Third Culture Kids and since then I have arranged my studies around this topic. It started with a simple paper about TCKs, then another, then some simple research and empirical studies. This TEDx-Talk builds on this interest and the second part draws from an empirical study conducted in December 2017.
