On July 12, 2012, Tom Teves received a phone call that would change his life forever: his son Alex had been killed in a mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, while protecting his girlfriend. In the days that followed, the media posted the name and mug shot of the shooter seemingly everywhere. In this powerful talk, Tom explains why this is a problem, what most mass murderers have in common, and what you can do to stop the next shooting before it happens.
Tom Teves and his wife, Caren, founded No Notoriety, a movement dedicated to reducing rampage mass murders by limiting the name and face of the killers in the media. They also founded the ACT Foundation to provide funding for scholarships, mentor programs, and opportunities for students with special needs.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
