Doctor's must make informed and timely decisions on a daily basis. In order to do so, they often use common symptoms found in textbooks to inform their judgements and apply them to all patients. However, as the world grows more diverse we find that all people do not experience the same symptoms from the same aliments. Suzette Ikejiani discusses how important it is to balance quick decisions with recognition that you are treating each person as an individual. From her experience as a medical student at Baylor College of Medicine, she provides an inside look at how important it is to establish the different experiences of patients from varying races, ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds. She highlights the importance of acknowledging these differences when administering effective medical treatment.
