Too often the focus is on birth registration overage and not birth certification coverage which is more important. This study shows the drop off from registration to certification of births and why it is critically important to shift the focus beyond birth registration for the sake of statistics, to birth certification for the sake of upholding fundamental human rights.

Indonesia is one of the most interesting country contexts for identity, both in the complexity and the critical importance of identity. This study illustrates the cycle of "invisibility" by using evidence from a survey of over 320,000 individuals across the country, illustrates how under registration is associated with education levels, wealth and gender (and vice versa).

Alan Gelb is one of the most brilliant minds I have had the pleasure to work with in the identity space. This book, coauthored with Anna Diofasi Metz, is one of the first of its kind, showing the full spectrum of identity from legal to functional and how technology or "digital ID" has the power to help and hinder development progress.

Besides my personal admiration for Drs. Jeff and Sonia Sachs, who I had the pleasure of working with during my time at Columbia University, Jeff's ability to clearly and concisely articulate the multidimensional factors of poverty on the global economy, the lives of people living in it, and most importantly what can and should be done to end it. The End of Poverty remains one of the best literary summaries of poverty and development economics to date.
