Teachers as Civil Disobedients

• April 2019
This talk outlines reasons for teachers to ask civilly disobedient questions in their practice. Inspired by Rosa Parks, Paolo Friere and John Taylor Gatto, Dr. Pylkas-Bock posits that asking why for public education can promote more child-centered practices in an educational policy environment that has placed adults and their business-minded efforts at the center of teaching and learning. This talk is aimed at an audience of teachers, parents and citizens in a democracy. The talk describes three shifts of thinking: radical patience, teacher as practitioner and take it (teaching) personally.
Dr. Kelly Pylkas-Bock is a mother of three boys and a second grade teacher. Her passion is children and she has been an educator for twenty years, teaching students in Kindergarten through university. Dr. Pylkas-Bock believes children have a right to be the principal actors on their own stage and that grown-ups should stand aside and allow them to learn, shine, fail and rise.
