The way we address poverty needs to be changed now! In this talk Jamey Webster explores the options we have for empowering the impoverished instead of treating the symptoms.
By empowering those classified as impoverished to stand on their own two feet, learn to provide for themselves, and live independently from hand outs and charitable support, we can break the terrible cycle of poverty. A child in poverty, once statistically destined to become an adult in poverty, can have a fighting chance for a completely different trajectory in life. A report from the Urban Institute found that around 70% children in poverty in the United States will never get to enroll in post-secondary education, compared to just 30% of children who were never poor. And only 3% of children in persistent poverty will graduate from college, compared to 37% of children who were never poor. We can change this, and make a path for every child to live to their full potential.
