In this talk, Gina Doekhie demonstrates how easy it is to gain access to your digital possessions. Together, we step into of the mind of a cybercriminal and see for ourselves how hackers attack. Gina’s point of departure is that your personal online information is just as accessible and available for cybercriminals as it is for anyone else. While browsing online, our digital traces can be tracked and monitored, and posted pictures cannot be withdrawn. And what about friends, family, and other members of our personal networks? Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter reveal a lot about our most personal contexts. And yes, this information can be used by cybercriminals to trick you.
Attacks by cybercriminals are successful in 95% of their attempts. This is not only due to a lack of technical security, but because of naïve behaviour as well. We click on untrusted links, we have weak passwords, and we do not update our computer. When a hacker gains access to your online possessions, he, or she, might be able to obtain credentials of (bank)accounts, extort you with controversial pictures, hold your personal information hostage for ransom. And we should realize the impact could be much bigger, when our sloppy digital behaviour effects a whole company, hospital, or even a city. But there is no reason to panic yet, in this TEDx talk Gina provides you with everyday tips and tricks on how to protect oneself online. After your trip through the hacker’s mind, you can fight cybercriminals and win.
