2011

I wish for you to stand up for what you care about by participating in a global art project, and together we'll turn the world ... INSIDE OUT.

The plan

Art has the power to change the world. It's a neutral place for exchanges and discussions, which means it has the ability to change perceptions -- the very way that we see others. Artist JR asks us to evoke this power by becoming a part of INSIDE OUT. A large-scale, participatory art project, INSIDE OUT transforms messages of personal identity into public art, by making digitally-uploaded images into free posters displayed in diverse communities. Posters can be placed anywhere, from office windows to walls of abandoned buildings. Participants document their pop-up exhibitions, making them viewable online and part of the larger archive of actions.

Current status

The INSIDE OUT project has traveled from Ecuador to Nepal, and Mexico to Palestine, inspiring group actions on varied themes such as hope, diversity, gender-based violence and climate change. INSIDE OUT actions have shown Haiti's resilience after the earthquake that killed hundreds of thousands; called attention to the wave of youth suicides at Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota; and introduced people living in refugee camps in Greece and Serbia. More than 300,000 portraits have been pasted in 140 countries worldwide. The project inspired the HBO documentary feature, Inside Out: The People's Art Project, and the book, JR: Inside Out, which includes contributions from TED curator Chris Anderson as well as Pharrell Williams.
