You are cordially invited to the next TEDxTheHague salon! Our November edition — themed Being Present in the Moment— is curated by Yolanthe Smit. Yolanthe writes: "How do we become aware of being in the moment? How and when do we feel it and where? How does 'being present' relate to our concept of time? Tonight we will explore, in an experiential way, our own ability of Being in the Moment. What is the role of boredom, mindfulness and slowing down in becoming more present with ourselves and others?" The following TED videos will help us to explore our relationship to time and how we experience it: Catherine Kerr: Mindfulness Starts With the Body Why does mindfulness begin by focusing on breath and body sensations? And does this awareness change the brain? Kerr's investigates brain mechanisms underlying body-based attention and healing in mindfulness and other mind-body practices such as Tai Chi. Carl Honore: In praise of slowness Journalist Carl Honore is best known for his advocacy of the Slow Movement. He believes the Western world's emphasis on speed erodes health, productivity and quality of life. But there's a backlash brewing, as everyday people start putting the brakes on their all-too-modern lives. Genevieve Bell - The Value of Boredom Corporate anthropologist Bell’s travelled the world talking to users of computer devices. She came back with an unexpected take-home message: it’s about the value of boredom. Bell reckons everyone needs to disconnect from their beloved technology devices and embrace doing nothing for a while.
