Our October edition — themed Space and How It Affects Us — is curated by TEDxTheHague regular Johan Olie. Johan writes:
"This session is our first time at Twijnstra Gudde's Haagse Kamers. We will meet at the attic room, designed by a member of the avant garde theatre group Dogtroep. It forces us to consciously experience the space around us. Or rather: Gives us the opportunity to feel where we are. So this got me thinking: How is it, that we are influenced by the space around us? How does the world shape us? And the other way around: How do we shape our world as we live our lives, and what control do we have over this interaction?"
We'll explore this theme by watching and discussing the following videos:
Ethel performs Blue Room
Let's get acquainted with this new space around us. How does it feel?
Deb Roy — The birth of a word
"Imagine if you could record your life, everything you said, everything you did, available in a perfect memory store at your fingertips..." Deb Roy of MIT uses the science of data-analyses to capture his life at home, as he, his baby son and his wife live it for five and a half years. Recreating their personal life as a readable map, he invites us to step into the landscape of their life.
Kevin Slavin — How algorithms shape our world
Our world is tangible, we live in a physical world, and technical progress is there to help us to control our ever expanding world. Science serves us, gives us complete control, no?
Evelyn Glennie — How to truly listen
Evelyn Glennie is a special kind of musician — one whose hearing is greatly impaired. So how does she meet the world she lives in? A sparkling talk, setting us back on our feet.
