Theme: An exploration of complexity, value and time.

Complexity, Value and Time will be the overarching theme of the event.

However, it is important to note that the extraordinary level of talent and energy that these events attract, make it virtually impossible for organizers to define or enforce too much structure or control over the ideas that are shared.

We have defined two primary goals for TEDxNewBedford.

First, we want attendees to learn from people who have elevated time not only as a corollary to money, but as a value inherent in itself. Many of our speakers have elevated time – quantity and quality – alongside other financial and operational metrics that their industries and organizations track and observe. A growing number of leading thinkers and practitioners from fields as diverse as economics, finance, technology, education and ecology, believe that the creation of time – high quality time for people share with their families and their communities as well as plow back into work -- is not a ‘soft’ goal or benefit, but rather a core pursuit worthy of our best efforts.

Second, we need to provide evidence to the larger community of leaders-in-their-fields – the decision makers with responsibility for investing precious resources – that TODAY, the SouthCoast of MA is home to a significant community of thinkers, innovators, creators in a number of fields. We need to prove that SouthCoast TODAY is home to a number of individuals and institutions that are innovating, creating, delivering value at world class levels. And that the region’s understanding of constant complexity, persistent value, and time creation are at the core of the values and principles guiding the region’s great work. Our goal is to present the case that there are a thousand or more small cities and towns across the United States that can, and will, participate in leading us to a better economy, polity, and society.

It is these two goals that led us to organize TEDxNewBedford.

TEDxNewBedford will showcase a collection of people – in some cases representing institutions, sectors, movements – who are ‘Axes’ (i.e. leading thinkers AND practitioners) in their fields. The speakers are people with intense passion, deep domain expertise and skills, and a record of applying them to create value, including in time, across a wide range of experiences.

Some of our speakers are locals, others from across the country. Together, they will present ideas worth sharing through the talks of their lives.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED- like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event.
