On Thursday, May 24th, selected speakers from all over the Bay Area and members of the community will join together to kick-off the annual TEDxGunnHighSchool event at Henry M. Gunn High School. Distinguished students and professionals alike will be presenting
their talks, which will cover a broad range of engaging topics from computer science, psychology, and sports, to art, film, music and more.
Jeff Clavier, Founder and Managing Partner of SoftTech VC Since 2004, Jeff has invested in 110+ consumer internet startups in areas like social media, monetization, search, gaming or B2B/B2C web services. With over 20 years of operational, entrepreneurial and venture capital experience, Clavier gives relevant perspective and value to his companies as they grow and progress. In 2007, he was recognized as one of the thirteen "Web 2.0 King Makers" by (late) Business 2.0. BusinessWeek named him one of "The 25 Most Influential People on the Web" in 2008, and one of the "Top 25 Angels in Tech" in 2010. He was also nominated in the "Best Angel" category at the Crunchies in 2009 and 2010.
Maria Recinto is the Philippine National Champion of Rhythmic Gymnastics, 2010 Asian Games Finalist, 2011 SEAGames Philippine Team Leader, and Youth Envoy to the United Nations, Philippines. She was awarded "Most Outstanding Migrant in Performing Arts, Culture, and Sport". She co-owns a non-profit organization called "Sunlight Foundation."
Co-Founder of Situate. He has collaborated on games with the Smithsonian, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Grameen America, and Nike Foundation, and his work has been featured in Newsweek, the Wall Street Journal, and on NPR. He is a director of the Come Out & Play festival in San Francisco, and his annual street game Journey to the End of the Night draws thousands of players each year. His current projects include Super Going, a mission-based game at SFMOMA's ArtGameLab, and Wanderers Union, a long distance wandering club that explores the Bay Area.
The current mayor of Palo Alto. Born in San Francisco, he attended both JLS Middle School and Gunn High School. The second youngest mayor in Palo Alto history, he is also the first Chinese American to be elected.
Mr. Luskin is a leading expert in the psychological field of forgiveness and happiness. He has worked with men and women involved in the violence in Northern Ireland and has helped financial advisors enhance their conflict resolution and stress management skills. His work, including his books Forgive for Good: A Proven Prescription for Health and Happiness and Stress and Stress Free for Good, has been featured prominently in many magazines.
The weeknight news anchor for NBC Bay Area. Raj anchors the nightly 5pm, 6pm and 11pm News and is among the Bay Area’s most well-known TV personalities. He is also part of the Giants broadcast team joining Jon Miller and Mike Krukow when the Giants are on NBC Bay Area. Viewers, critics and colleagues have praised Raj’s unique style. He's been honored by the Associated Press and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for his reporting and anchoring. Raj has reported on-location from the Olympics in Salt Lake City, Athens, Turin and Vancouver. He’s among the handful of people in the world to have run the Olympic Torch three times (1996, 2002 and 2008).
CEO of firstRAIN, INC. Penny is a board member of the Anita Borg Institute and the California Community Partners for Youth, and the former Chairman and CEO of Simplex Solutions. She also blogs for the Huffington Post.
Praniti created the first high school chapter for Asha for Education. She is dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged children in India through education, and raises funds for projects based in India. During her visits to the projects, Praniti met over 1,000 children with whom she formed strong and personal bonds with
Devin's works have garnered awards in the Student Television Network Convention. His documentary, Kwashiorkor: Battle of Malnutrition, was screened at TEDxYouth 2010. Devon is a senior at Gunn High School.
Associate Professor and Associate Chair for Education in the Computer Science department at Stanford University. He is co-chair of the ACM/IEEE-CS joint task force on Computer Science Curricula 2013, which sets curricular guidelines for college computer-science programs at an international level. His research interests include computer science education, artificial intelligence, and web search.
A graphics researcher at University of California, San Diego. He is interested in research involving photorealistic rendering topics such as camera stimulation, appearance modeling, and global illumination.
Founder and CEO of Primer Labs. Peake made a game called Code Hero that teaches players how to code while letting them create their own games. He is the CEO of Primer Labs, a startup that creates learning games to make all knowledge playable. He is also the editor of Agile Journal, a web and mobile applications developer at Sling, and the lead animation editor at Atomic Cartoons.
A Gunn Senior and a national finalist in the 2012 Intel Science Talent Search His bioinformatics and genomics project was on proteins and vaccines, and could "cut down on the cost of [vaccine] production, speed it up and make a vaccine for pretty much any virus there is out there."
Mr. Gleason is an art teacher at Gunn High School and a professional graphic designer. He was recently featured on a French television show, and is a renowned artist.
