About this event
At this TEDxSMUSalon, we will examine how the creative class plays a vital role in moving the cultural needle. Melissa Chiu, Museum Director and Curator for Contemporary Asian and Asian-American art at the Asia Society, will join Nasher Sculpture Center Director Jeremy Strick to examine the impact of creativity on culture.
Melissa Chiu is a New York museum director, curator and author. She is currently the Museum Director of Asia Society, as well as its Vice President of Global Art Programs, responsible for programming its Park Avenue museum and future museum facilities currently under construction in Hong Kong and Houston. Both of these centers are scheduled to open in 2012. She is the author of several books on Chinese contemporary art, and is one of the world's leading authorities on modern and contemporary Asian art. She is a board member of the Association of Art Museum Directors, the American Association of Museums, and the Museum Association of New York. She is also on the founding Advisory committee for the USC American Academy in China and has participated in the advisory committees for the Gwangju and Shanghai Biennales.
The Nasher Sculpture Center is pleased to welcome Jeremy Strick as the new Director of the Nasher Sculpture Center. Mr. Strick began his position on March 2, 2009. “Having worked with the Nasher Collection at the very outset of my career, I am especially delighted to be joining the Nasher Sculpture Center at this exciting moment in the history of this marvelous institution,” said Mr. Strick. “No museum anywhere is better-positioned to further the understanding of, and appreciation for modern and contemporary sculpture. I look forward to working with a talented staff and committed board to create a program that through its quality, scope, and ambition will capture the attention of the world.”
