Theme: Ideological Diversity

This event occurred on
March 17, 2017
11:30am - 1:00pm -03
(UTC -3hrs)
Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul
Brazil

Since Brazil's educational system does not encourage us to be open-minded nor to embrace diversity– whether it is religious diversity, cultural, racial or ideological, many students of Colégio Israelita Brasileiro (CIB) often forget about their privilege and do not understand that we are responsible to make change, for we believe education is the most powerful weapon to reach that.
With this TEDxYouth Event, we aim to raise awareness on important topics, such as social inequality in different ethnical backgrounds and issues on education as well as to empower youth to become leaders and direct agents of that change. The topics of the talks were meant to embrace ideological diversity and curiosity in global affairs that have been impacting our countries and cities. Therefore, the speakers were young students who are incredibly interested in exchanging ideas with other bright young individuals to make this world a better and more inclusive place to live in!

Ilana Z. Axelrod is a 17-year-old Brazilian women’s rights activist who seeks to reduce gender-based violence amongst marginalized communities. She has created a non-profit group at an international NGO, WIZO (Women’s International Zionist Organization), with which has gathered many young women to volunteer in NGOs for disabled women, victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. She is the organizer of this TEDxYouth Event, aiming to raise awareness on the importance of inclusion and visibility in our society today. After attending the Youth Assembly at the United Nations, she has started developing a website with two fellow Italian attendees, where women in both countries will be able to report sexual harassment, know their rights and access NGOs working for their safety as well as free help and counseling throughout the process of reporting. Their goal is to raise awareness on the topic and encourage women everywhere to fight for their social, economic and personal empowerment.
