In news today, it is impossible to go a day without hearing about a story being interrupted or altered. Too often do we bear witness to the narratives of others being told by those who have yet to experience the realities of the unspoken. TEDxUTSC Ellipses strives to open the narrative, continue the story, and give way for born storytellers to make their mark.

An ellipsis is not an omission. It’s an invitation to continue a story. An unfinished thought, perhaps shrouded in uncertainty but destined to change the world. A slight pause a speaker takes when they gather just the right words to impress the importance of an idea.

As humans, we intuitively fill in the blanks, based on our own experiences and self-identification- but we have a greater calling. This year TEDxUTSC invites you to join us on a journey of learning and discovery, a collective challenge to open our minds and experience the stories, realities, and truths that lie just beyond the fragmented thought. It won’t be easy, but we want to share this experience with you.

With the end of each conference, we end with lingering thoughts and questions. Now our fifth year, as our stories continuously evolve, TEDxUTSC encourages you to reflect on your own narrative. Vocomotive is UTSC’s very own a cappella group comprised of both students as well as alumni.

Adrian Nestor

Dr. Nestor completed his doctoral work on the neural and computational basis of face recognition (Brown University; PhD in Cognitive Science, 2009). After completing his PhD, he joined the Department of Psychology and the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in 2009 as a postdoctoral fellow. In this position, he investigated the neurocomputational basis of face and visual word recognition. Subsequently, he made the transition to research independence as a research scientist with the Department of Psychology at CMU in 2012. Dr. Nestor's research program is uncovering the neurocomputational basis of visual recognition through the use of advanced neuroimaging methods, through computational modeling, and through neuropsychological investigations in patients with visual deficits.

Aisha Ahmad

Aisha Ahmad is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto, and the Director of the Islam and Politics Initiative and a Senior Researcher at the Global Justice Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs. She has conducted extensive fieldwork on conflict dynamics in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Kenya, Lebanon, and Mali. Her forthcoming book with Oxford University Press, titled "Jihad & Co.: Black Markets and Islamist Power" explores the economic drivers of these complex security crises.

Cedrik Ruiz

Cedrik Ruiz is a proud 90s kid. He is a third year student at the University of Toronto - Scarborough (UTSC) who volunteers at several hospitals and enjoys learning new things.

Cheryl Thompson

Dr. Cheryl Thompson is a Banting Post-Doctoral Fellow (2016-2018) at the University of Toronto and the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). Dr. Thompson is also an instructor in the Department of Visual Studies at UTM and the Canadian Studies Program, University College where she teaches visual culture and the politics of identity, North American consumer culture, 1890-present, and Black Canadian studies.

David Zweig

David Zweig is an Associate Professor of Organizational Behaviour and the Chair of the Department of Management at UTSC. He studies the dark side of the behaviours at work and how essentially, bad behaviour creates more bad behaviour.

Derek Kent

Derek Kent is Chief Marketing Officer for the Canadian Olympic Committee, and the architect of the newly re-imagined Canadian Olympic Team brand. Derek is a veteran marketing and communications executive with more than two decades of international experience working for some of the world's most recognizable brands. As the CMO of the COC, Derek leads an outstanding team that are the creative forces spearheading Team Canada’s brand building initiatives.

Desmond Cole

Desmond Cole is an activist, author, and award-winning freelance journalist. His work can also be found in Toronto Life, Walrus, NOW, Ethnic Aisle, and other many publications. Desmond won the award for Best New Magazine Writer at the 2016 National Magazine Awards. Desmond Is currently working on his first book, a non-fiction exploration of the experiences of Black people in Canada.

Georgette Zinaty

Georgette Zinaty is the Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations for the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC). An alumna of UTSC, Ms. Zinaty holds a Bachelor degree in English and Political Science, an MBA from the University of Liverpool and a MSc from the University of Reading. She is currently working towards her Doctorate at the Henley Business School (a joint program with the Rotman School of Business) with a research focus on business leadership and in particular what leadership will look like in decades to come. Ms. Zinaty also has served on a number of boards including the University of Liverpool Advisory Board where she was the only woman and only international representative. She is also an active member of the Business Excellence Awards Committee of the Toronto Region Board of Trade. She is a strong advocate for leadership and inclusion within organizations.

Hana Syed

Hana is a student, singer, and social-advocate. She writes and performs songs with her siblings in the band, DEYSofficial. Currently, they have a song out with the ILO’s Music Against Child Labour Initiative and were featured by the CBC for their Pan-Am/Parapan-Am Games song last year. Together, they also started the non-profit organization, Global Youth Impact (GYI) - a platform for youth to be leaders and change-makers within their communities/abroad.

Marcus Medford

Marcus “Roi” Medford, also known as Mars the Poet, is a poet, journalist and a 5th year student at the University of Toronto Scarborough studying journalism and philosophy.

Morgan Campbell

Morgan Campbell is a sports writer at the Toronto Star whose work explores the intersection of sports, business and social issues. He’s a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, and the winner of the 2003 National Newspaper Award for Sports Writing.

Rashi Gupta

Rashi is a recent graduate from the University of Toronto Scarborough. She received a double major in Anthropology and Health Studies and was actively involved in both Scarborough and St. George campuses. In her graduating year, she received the Letter award, the Principals award and the President’s award on behalf of faculty and students. She currently works for Deloitte Canada as a Business Analyst in the Human Capital group.

Sonja Nikkila

Sonja Nikkila grew up in Detroit, watching the CBC Windsor feed of Don Cherry making inflammatory statements in incendiary suits. She fled eastward, chasing education to Boston and then Scotland, little knowing that she would wind up back in the grips of the CBC broadcast zone.
