The world is becoming more open and transparent. (Social) Media connects us with each other and the world, at the speed of light. And so we learn more and more about each other. About our world. Nearby and far away. Creating a new order. A new energy. A new dynamic.
We imagine we are open to new and different ideas. But are we really opening up for other realities? Are we really connected?
Art of Engagement, and its different aspects, is the central theme of TEDxHilversum 2016.

Bart Hufen

Game Changer, founder Brandnewgame
Although gaming is nothing more than a repetitive routine, many of us get hooked by it. That is, if a designer creates the game in an attractive way. A gamer gets in a flow, endorfines run through his blood. What if you could use this principle in organisations?, is the question Bart Hufen asked himself. What if you could make your work just as fun as gaming by applying gaming principles? What if you could bring your work experience to the next level and get more engaged by the art of games. These and other related questions will be answered by Bart Hufen in his talk on our stage.

Carly E.

When she was a little girl, Carlijn already had her cello by her side. Trained as a classical musician, she toured amongst others with National Youth Orchestras from France to China. Her experiences living and working abroad in England and Argentina inspired her to branch out on her own, away from the orchestra and becoming a singer-songwriter. Inspired by the thriving music scenes she encountered there, she recently released her first EP Blue Funny You, recorded in Buenos Aires. Her debut album will release spring 2017 and she plans to tour the theaters in support. Carly E.’s sound is passionate, raw and honest. Her cello is still at her side.

Cris Toala Olivares

Photographer
A volcano is an intriguing phenomenon of the earth. According to the award winning photographer Cris Olivares we can learn a lot from volcano’s and from the people who live in such a place. It brings one closer to the power of the earth and therefor also closer to oneself. “Feeling the earth shake, watching lava clouds up to twelve kilometer in the sky makes you feel small”, says Cris. “But is also made me feel I belong. I belong here on earth. You don’t make the earth as humans, the earth makes you.” Cris Olivares, former winner of the prestigious Zilveren Camera and National Geographic photographer, is making a serie around ten volcano’s. Each volcano tells a different story: love when it comes to three volcano’s in Ecuador, the energy of the earth in Iceland, money making on the Italian island of Stromboli, destruction of ash and lava on Sumatra and Cape Verde, offering on Bromo, science and technology in Japan and the political issue around a volcano in Turkey/Armenia.

Erik van der Ven

The Other Half of YouTubers duo House of Halo
They were very happy with their new website at House of Halo in 2014, and for this reason decided to create a music video without music of Pharell Williams hit: Happy. As a joke. Just for fun. And it became a life changing moment for Erik van der Ven. The video went viral, in the classical sense of the word. Over 4,5 million views today. The #withoutmusic videos from House of Halo are now a phenomenon and more than 400.000 followers from the US, England, Mexico, Brasil and South-Korea are eagerly waiting every Monday what they have created for this week. On Sunday the #sundaysong wakes you up and every Wednesday they upload a cover video. Their secret for success? Engagement. Engaging with their audience. Letting them decide which song should be the next cover video. Taking all feedback and comments seriously, as their audience (between 14-34 years) is key to them. On our stage Erik will elaborate more about how doing what you love most is a very sticky business.

Kristien Hemmerechts

Autor, professor in English literature at the University of Leuven, Belgium.
And then the diagnosis hit her hard: breast cancer. But not just her, Belgian author Kristien Hemmerechts, it also hit her friends and family and students* and neighbours and fans and other people who know her. But in a different way than she expected. Quickly she found out that it is a binary world out there: those of the healthy people and those who have cancer. She discovered that people found it very difficult to cope with the situation. More difficult than she expected. “The unclearness of the situation has to do with it”, she says. “You do not look ill, you do not act ill. You do not feel ill. But there is a devastating disease in your body at work and you are terrified.” When Kristien lost two sons, reactions were warm. “We can all relate to that. And the response is accordingly.” Her mentally ill sister always told her: “Kristien, you have no idea what it feels like to have a mental illness”. Kristien: “I understand that better now.”

Paulus Emden Huitema

Saskia Beer

TransformCity® won the second prize (civic engagement) in Le Monde International Smart Cities Innovation Awards 2016.

Shanna Zwart

Shoutcaster, streamer
Some people – of a certain generation – might think that gaming is an antisocial event, is T O T A L L Y wrong. For Shannanina gaming was her way out of her depression at the age of 19, in the aftermath of her father’s suicide. She spent two months in bed gaming, ordering in pizza and basically just ‘being’. She was following a streamer [red. someone who has a webcam operating on him/her while gaming] and thought: ‘I can do that’. At first it gave her a reason to wear something else than pyjama’s and put on some make-up. For some time she was only the lonely on the webcam, but one day she spotted her first follower. And then six and then …. the hundred thousands she has now. Her singing during gaming became one of her unique characteristics, at the point where followers now have requests for certain songs. And donate money for her performance as a gamer/singer. On Twitch – a gaming platform – she is hot. She is the hottest female streamer in the Netherlands.

Wouter van den Berg

Neuro-economist
He was a talented professional soccer player. Made it even into the Dutch national team. Talent was clearly in his genes, but that wasn’t enough to make it to the top. Why not, was his primary questions. And it made Wouter van den Berg decide to study economics and neuro sciences and even become a professor in the latter. How do you unleash your talent? How do you get rid of the caged version of yourself? What keeps you from having access to your greater self? Wouter is convinced – and as a scientist has seen the data and the proof – that DNA is absolutely part of the ingredients one can work with in his or her life. The genes your father and mother gave you, determine partly your talents. But as a small baby you draw conclusions early in life: ‘can I trust people?’ ‘Am I worthy to be loved and cared for?’ Later when your personality is shaped you start yourself questions like, ‘Who am I?’ These unconscious and conscious processes determine your self image. The answers to these ques
