The Notes are an indie folk band straight out of Rapla, Estonia, consisting of Markus Bachmann Kõu Kaur and Helar Tappo and last week they were awarded with the title Noortebänd 2016 (Youth Band 2016) Together they make their own music and perform it.

Anna Lelik

Journalist
Anna Lelik is a journalist and media manager from Bishkek, Kyrgystan. Thanks to her degrees from Kyrgystan and Strasbourg, along with 7 years of experience, has helped her become one of the key people behind the evolution of online media in her home country. Being a journalist, she has produced news reports, features and investigative stories from the Central Asian region, in an array of topics that includes economy, political crisis, corruption and human rights abuse. For the last three years, she has been responsible for design of project proposals to international donor organizations in Kloop, a youth journalism school.

Beth Barnes

CS student + effective altruist
Beth is a computer science student at the University of Cambridge. She has been involved with Effective Altruism, a growing social movement based on the idea of using evidence to figure out how to do the most good, founding an EA society at her high school. She believes that steering the development of technologies such as synthetic biology and artificial intelligence is a high-impact area to focus on. She co-wrote a policy paper on ‘Navigating AI Development’ last year with student thinktank The Wilberforce Society and this year founded a new student society at Cambridge, ‘Future of Sentience’, focusing on how to steer technological development wisely. She is a very un-stereotypical computer scientist as she doesn’t play video games and loves the outdoors!

Charlie Karniol

Electronic Musician
Upon returning from an expedition to the Web of Wonders, Charlie Karniol, a wizard from the village of Tallinn, decides to try his hand at using a newly found magic mirror that emits mysterious noises. “Whoosh!” No, not like that. “BzzzaaGRAAHHnnngfffh!” Yes, that’s more like it. After countless hours of hand-waving and head-shaking, Charlie can now say that he isn’t half as bad a wizard as he thought.

Gustav Tamkivi

Primary school student + author of Gusmath youtube channel
Gustav is 10 years old and is studying in fifth grade. As he started school, he developed greater interest for mathematics and he liked solving problems in Khan Academy. At eight years old he decided to start making math videos for his peers which, in addition to what is taught in school, would introduce alternative methods for solving math problems. In addition to multiplication, division, compounding and subtraction, Gustav has also recorded clips on his favourite subjects, like supernovas, electricity and phobias, with the most recent video being a peek into the periodic table.

Hans Hubert Sams

High School Student
Hans Hubert Sams is a regular 18-year old high school student. It's hard to define him with only a couple of words since his curiosity has made him discover quite a few aspects of life. From seven years old he has had an interest in space and all of the mystery that reigns there. A few years later he started to discover the wonderful world of cinema through the medium of montage and visual effects and now he has also picked up a passion for playing the piano and painting. All of us experience making choices in life, between one or another, but Hans is on a quest to combine his interests to make a whole.

Johanna Maria Tõugu

High School Student + Founder of packageless store
Johanna Maria Tõugu is a high school student whose greatest mission is to reduce the amount of garbage, plastic and redundant packaging. Having seen the effects of mindless consumerism on our planet, she decided to think globally and act locally and start her own package-free store Paljas Pala (Naked Bit), where a plastic package has no home. She believes that everyone is born to save the world and that to do this one doesn’t need to be a corporate CEO or politician. Everyone’s choices-yes, even the tiniest ones, create a better or worse tomorrow, so the next time you feel thirsty, fill your recyclable bottle with tap water instead of reaching for some bottled water.

Lili Milani

Geneticist
Lili Milani has a Ph.D in molecular medicine, from Uppsala University in Sweden. Her main subjects of research are epigenetics and pharmacogenetics, ranging from studying the variety of drug disintegration within healthy organisms to studying the differences of healthy and sick individuals in the genome and epigenome. She is the Senior Research Fellow of the Tartu University Estonian Biobank and the director of the core laboratory, which enables her to keep up with latest developments in DNA analysis tech. In addition, Lili is involved with developing the strategies for the implementation of personal medicine strategies in Estonia. “We’ve reached a turning point in healthcare, as technology and knowledge progress, new opportunities are created. Genetic research allows us to predict and prevent diseases instead of fighting their consequences.”

Madis Vasser

VR researcher
Madis is a University of Tartu Computer Science Ph.D student, whose main field of research is studying the inner workings of the brain with the help of virtual reality(VR). In his free time he manages the Estonian VR community and is trying his luck in game development. At the crossroads of these three interests shines a vision of a future which is seems quite alien, but full of real possibilities.

Mihkel Joala

Inventor
Mihkel Joala is a professional inventor. He has studied industrial engineering at TTÜ ,and after that mechatronics at Tartu KHK. Since the beginning of the computer era, and therefore the virtual era, there jas been a search for ways to move between the two worlds. Mihkel has been fascinated by giving virtual objects a real, physical form. Two years ago Mihkel invented Sprayprinter, which allows to spray paint images from a smart phone onto a wall. Spraypriner was crowned the winner of this year’s Ajujaht.

Nathan Hunter

Trainer at the European Youth Parliament
Nathan Hunter, 24 from the UK, is a Politics and Human Resources graduate who works as a trainer for the European Youth Parliament. Having performed in Armenia, Georgia, and France, he uses spoken word poetry to bring to light pressing gender and racial issues. Living in the 21st century we see sexism and gender discrimination as an evil of the past. Why do we need to focus on it any more? Aren't there greater battles to fight? In this Spoken word poem, Nathan will challenge us to rethink our perspectives on modern day sexism and patriarchy, and question whether we have in fact taken a step into the future or whether we have instead just changed our perspectives.

Rait Ratasepp

Ultra-triathlete
33-year old Estonian ultra-athlete Rait Ratasepp has been dubbed by the media as “Ironman” and “Miracle Man”, because during his short career as ultra-athlete he has chalked up an impressive list of achievements. Only a few years ago, Rait was a lawyer at a prestigious law firm, but was not satisfied with only a comfortably regular life. Thus, he made a U-turn in his life: quit his firm and dedicated himself to his athletic career. By today, he has become the only true ultra-triathlete in Estonia and one of the best in the world.

Siyanda Mohutsiwa

Writer
Siyanda Mohutsiwa is a TED speaker, satirist, writer and holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Botswana. She is a pan-Africanist and social media addict. She is currently at the Iowa Writer’s Workshop doing an MFA in Fiction. She claims to be writing a novel.

Tiina Saar-Veelmaa

Tiina-Saar Veelmaa, born 6th of July 1972 in Rakvere, Estonia, is known to the wider audience as a passionate researcher of workplace happiness, a lecturer, consultant, counsellor, whose main fields of research, besides workplace happiness, include life balance and wholosome workplace culture. On these subjects, she has inspired hundreds of Estonian organisations and thousands of employees or job seekers. A psychologist and psychodramatical director by education, she has starred in national television as a counsellor for a jobseeking show, created considerable amounts of content for the career-counselling e-course karjäärinõu.ee and in addition to countless articles, Tiina has also written six books. Currently she works as a career counsellor and therapeutist under her self-made brand Aaretesaar.
