Lisbet Haglund

Associate Professor, Department of Surgery, Division of Orthopaedics, Faculty of Medicine, McGill University
Lisbet Haglund is a basic scientist and holds a position of Associate Professor in the division of Orthopedics at McGill University. Her research focus is on understanding how back pain arises and how it can be prevented. Lisbet is part of a multidisciplinary team of basic scientists, engineers and spine surgeons; a critical combination to address all aspects of this condition. They have together developed bioreactors where live human tissue can be maintained in an environment mimicking that found in the body. This system opens endless possibilities to learn more about how back pain occurs, and provides a platform to evaluate potential treatment strategies. ___________________________ For more information visit http://www.tedxmontreal.com

Margaret Magdesian

Neuroscientist, Founder & CEO of Ananda Devices
Dr Margaret Magdesian is a neuroscientist studying the mechanism of neuronal degeneration and repair with over 15 years of experience in biopharmaceutical research. Tired of the slow, expensive and inefficient process of drug development, she developed in collaboration with researchers from the Montreal Neurological Institute and McGill University, a new technique to increase the efficiency of cellular assays. This new technique enabled the reconnection of neurons 60 times faster than previously reported. In the future, similar techniques may even allow surgeons to reestablish connections after injury. In 2015, she launched a company called ANANDA Devices (Advanced Nano Design Applications) to extend the use of these devices and techniques to other fields in medicine. Her hope is to stimulate other scientists to achieve reproducible and impactful results faster. Dr Magdesian’s innovation has the potential to dramatically accelerate the drug development cycle of new therapies for people that need it. http://www.anandadevices.com/ ___________________________ For more information visit http://www.tedxmontreal.com
