Theme: Setting Sails

This event occurred on
November 12, 2016
Bremen, Bremen
Germany

Setting Sails is designed to bridge the gap between a local event in Bremen, and a thematic focus on global issues, such as Climate Change, poverty, and gender equality. Bremen was a member of the Hanseatic League, the dominant force of Baltic marine trade between 1400 and 1800, bringing wealth to Northern German . As such, the city is still very attached to marine life and exploration, the sea, sails and ships are commonly used symbols in Bremen as well as neighbouring cities such as Hamburg and Lübeck. Setting Sails thus links our event to the historic past of its hometown, and at the same time to the future of our common home, planet earth. We want to set sails towards a brighter future, a world without poverty, a world without Climate Change, a world without discrimination. “Setting Sails” will give stage to global citizens who are fulfilled by an idea that can contribute to this journey – starting in Hanseatic Bremen, ready to conquer the world.

Jacobs University has an extremely vibrant, open-minded student body. Our students love and promote TEDx since three years already, and are very much looking forward to the next event. In the past years, many brought international friends to Bremen just to attend the conference - this was an enriching experience for all of us. But we are not just serving the student body - interactions with the local citizens from Bremen / northern Germany are definitely important for us. "Ganz schön plietsch" - TEDx enthusiasm in Bremen slang!
