Ethics, common sense or rationality?

The first edition of TedxKlangValley brought together inspiring individuals to share their stories on these interesting topics. The one-day TEDx conference highlighted various aspects of ethics and social responsibility and the work being done to shift Malaysia towards a more socially-ethical nation.

Some of the Highlights

TEDxKlangValley was a green event. As the event organisers we had made measurable improvements in reducing the event’s environmental impacts.

1) Waste, electricity and carbon emission equivalents were calculated for the event.
2) No plastic water bottles were used - Drinking water was dispensed in cup/tumbler. People were encouraged to bring their own cups/tumblers
3) A number waste minimisation, energy efficiency and environmental improvement opportunities have been identified for future events (see recommendations).
4) The venue chosen was a green building (DiGi House)
5) Event decor was minimal and made out of reused wood and boxes. Boxes (depicting the event name) were painted and will be reused again for next event. At the moment the boxes are being used as shelves
6) Food - No styrofoam were used. Food and drinks were served in reusable/washable plastic plates and cups. Leftover food was distributed to the homeless after the event.
7) The room used was on electricity saving mode when not in use during longer breaks.
8) Public transportation was encouraged. DiGi provided shuttle vans to/from a KTM commuter station.
9) Event door gifts - Discarded abalone shells from an island were made into key chains and wrapped with recycled paper. Only one left behind by the guests!
10) Speakers' token of appreciation - Bags from recycled buntings, tupperware sets, abalone shells, luggage tag
11) Post-event analysis. A number waste minimization, energy efficiency and environmental improvement opportunities have been identified for future events.

Based on the facts and findings, we have produced a Green Event Report. The purpose of this Green Event Report is to monitor and identify future opportunities in order to minimize the event’s carbon footprint and environmental impacts.
