In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Arimee Gambill

Arimee Gambill is a junior at Grand Rapids High School. She began classical ballet training at the age of 11 right here at Reif Dance, and has since performed many soloist and principal roles in school productions. She has spent summers at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, Alonzo King LINES Ballet and the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance. Her training includes classical ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary, improvisation, and most recently, Ohad Nahrin’s GAGA movement language and has has also done some choreography of her own.

Darren Olson

Darren Olson grew up in Young America, Minnesota and went on to attend the University of Minnesota, Morris where he earned a BA in Chemistry. From there, he entered the chemistry graduate program at Carnegie Mellon University. Darren left the program after two years but stayed in Pittsburgh where he taught at Carnegie Mellon as a Laboratory Instructor for 4 more years. He has spent the past 14 years teaching high school chemistry and physics, the last 9 at Grand Rapids High school. When he's not teaching, Darren enjoys traveling and spending time in the woods or on the water with his wife and 2 daughters.

Joe Franzone

Joe Franzone serves as a pastor in Northern Minnesota. He was born in Kansas, raised in South Florida and schooled in central Texas, where he graduated from Austin School of Theology and Abilene Christian University. Joe and his wife Nicole have two children, a son at university and a daughter in high school.

Michael Sullivan

High School Student
Michael Sullivan is currently a senior at Hibbing High School. He is the President of the Hibbing Student Council, Teens Against Drugs and Alcohol, and Iron Range Youth in Action. He is also a four sport athlete and a member of the band. Michael has done a substantial amount of work with Advocates for Family Peace and the NO More campaign, educating peers about domestic abuse and sexual assault. He has had the opportunity to have a one on one discussion with Vice President Joe Biden about how to engage more youth in this topic. Michael has received state, national, and international awards for his efforts.

Myrna Peterson

Myrna Peterson was born in south eastern Iowa, the 10h of 11 children, and raised on a Field of Dreams farm. After from high school Myrna went on to college to become a teacher. Her teaching career took her to the Twin Cities, Brainerd, Blackduck and then to Deer River. Myrna went back to school in 1989 and received her Masters from Bemidji State University in educational technology. In June 1995, Myrna became a quadriplegic with a spinal cord injury from an auto accident, and her world was forever changed. Many adversities have altered the course of Myrna's 21 years in a wheelchair.

Olivia Skaja

Olivia Skaja started taking violin lessons when she was 9, and has played in the Itasca Orchestra and Strings Program, Itasca Symphony and has played in the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra and the Grand Rapids Players pit orchestra. Her mentors have included Richard Dugan, Mary LaPlant, and Alex DePue and now studies with Nathan Cole (associate concertmaster, LA Philharmonic) via Skype. Olivia has attended Northern Lights Music Festival, Meadowmount School of Music, and recently returned from her third summer at Interlochen Arts Camp. She is the recipient 7 consecutive Superior ratings in the Itasca Music Clubs Festival, first place in Reif 2014 Top 10 Talent Search and first place in the 2015 Heartland Symphony Concerto Competition. She is the 2016 MN State Oldtime Fiddle Champion, and is ranked in the top 5 fiddlers in MN. Olivia has been teaching private violin students of all ages since she was 12 and is an assistant teacher for the IOSP. She plans to pursue a Violin Performance degree.

Scott Johnson

Scott Johnson has served as the Chief of Police of the Grand Rapids Police Department since 2014. His law enforcement career spans over 40 years, including three previous departments, two as Chief of Police. Scott holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Safety Management and Administration, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and completed the course work for a Doctorate in Public Administration. He was an adjunct instructor in the Hamline University Graduate School of Business and graduated from the 173rd Session of the FBI National Academy. Scott's with us today to share his idea worth spreading about collaborative policing.
