Theme: "Demur"

This event occurred on
July 11, 2016
Arcadia, Wisconsin
United States

We have forever been intrigued with the paradigm shift. Imagine the mind that first realized the earth wasn't flat, or the first time someone challenged--or objected--or demurred--our comfortable geocentric notion of the cosmos. There is a freedom and a humility in thinking differently--another step closer to figuring out the truth of something. Or figuring out that there is so little we have figured out. Our event is centered around the power of this simple verb: DEMUR.

This is our first year at Arcadia Public Schools hosting a TEDxYouth event. Courageous, inspiring people have accepted the invite to share their moments of "demur." Moments where a hesitation or objection changed everything. Our theme is rooted in Emily Dickinson's poem #620:

Much Madness is divinest Sense --
To a discerning Eye --
Much Sense -- the starkest Madness --
'Tis the Majority
In this, as all, prevail --
Assent -- and you are sane --
Demure -- you're straightway dangerous --
And handled with a Chain --

"Demur" is defined in my old Random House dictionary with several options that range from "to make objection" to "linger or hesitate." We have set aside an evening in July to willing hesitate and linger with objections to our comfortable way of viewing our world.

We hope you take the time to join us on July 11th, 2016 to experience TEDxYouth@APS: "Demur."
