x = independently organized TED event

This event occurred on
June 1, 2016
New City, New York
United States

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Alexander Borovoy

Student
Alex is known in Rockland County for his confidence, intelligence, and love of Kanye West. He is also a Vice President of CHSN's Philosophy Club: Forethought. He will continue to unapologetically speak his mind at John's Hopkins University this upcoming fall.

Benjamin Eisenberg

Student
As a captain of CHSN's academic team, Ben does not shy away from a challenge, and has a bank of random facts stored in the back of his head. He is North's student representative on the Board of Education this year, and he looks forward to impressing a new audience at the University of California, Berkeley, this fall.

Daniel Murray

Student
Dan runs the technology for every single event at CHSN, making him half of the reason that the school functions. When Dan is not sitting at the soundboard, people can find him shredding the guitar solo in "Purple Rain" at Rockfest (which he also organized). Next year, for his senior year of high school, Dan will participate in the WISE internship program.

Dennis Covert

Teacher
Mr. Covert is the head of the Science Department at CHSN and a much-beloved teacher of AP Physics. Mr. Covert's passion in the classroom and dedication outside of it inspires students to major in Engineering in college. He helps organize events like Solar Eclipse Viewings and the annual Cardboard Boat Regatta to encourage love for science.

Hailey Schwartz

Student
As a junior at CHSN, Hailey is extremely active in the art community. Hailey even designed the programs for this TEDx event. Besides her artistic side, Hailey holds a very unique view of high school and the people who attend it, which she will share in her talk.

Jacob Studwell

Student
As president of CHSN's JSA chapter, Jacob is extremely active in North's political community. Students and teachers alike admire him for his impeccable public speaking skills and well-articulated thoughts. As the multi-faceted person he is, Jacob hopes to continue to impress as a Computer Engineering major at Washington University in St. Louis next year.

Jenna Grossbarth

Student
This past year, Jenna worked tirelessly as Stage Manager on CHSN's fall drama, Arabian Nights. Jenna also lent a huge hand in managing the TEDx stage and set design. Her creativity and endless generosity will live on and inspire many others at the University of Southern Maine this fall.

Leslie Crill

Teacher
Mrs. Crill is one of two Italian teachers at Clarkstown North. Students remark her constant kindness and warm sense of humor, along with her worldly knowledge, which is partially attributed to her time living abroad in Italy. In her talk, she encourages people to believe in themselves and, "Carpe diem."

Liana Gertzer

Teacher
Mrs. Gertzer is a biology teacher at CHSN, known for her outstanding intellect and passion for learning. She challenges students to be their best every day, and encourages constant learning, in and out of the classroom. In her talk, she explains her perspective, and science's perspective, of what matters.

Lucy Levin

Student
This is the final bio that Lucy will write in her entire high school career, and that makes her sad. This past year, she worked as an editor on the CHSN yearbook and the editor-in-chief of CHSN's literary magazine, "Epiphany." She is an avid lover of television and making people laugh, which she hopes to continue at Boston University as a journalism major this fall.

Mary Patella

Teacher
Mrs. Patella works as CHSN's IB Program Coordinator, and as an AP Calculus teacher. She encourages students to be their best through service, creativity, and perseverance. As an alumnus of St. John's College, she's not afraid to run her classroom in an unorthodox way, whether it be inviting graduated students in to talk about their college experiences, or making students get out of their chairs to do yoga on a rough day.

Phoebe Fisher

Student
As a sophomore, Phoebe is already left an enormous impact on Clarkstown North. She is the Vice President of the Youth Democratic Club, President of the Animal Rights Club, and is on her way to the Maryland for the National level of the National History Day competition this June. Outside of school, Phoebe participates in SAEDA and educates her peers with her insightful outlook on life.

Rian Farrelley

Student
Rian is CHSN's resident stand-up comedian. He loves making people laugh, and has learned over his high school career to laugh at himself, as well. Rian will continue brightening up peoples' days at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute this fall.
