Joint Base Lewis McChord is hosting TEDxJBLM in order to generate new ideas and perceptions about the world around us. Our inaugural event hopes to foster discussion about the challenges faced by our community and society at large through careful introspection while arming our Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines with a greater world view. The event will be a full day conference hosting 13 carefully curated speakers and performers as well as several recorded TED talks. In the spirit of TED and ideas worth spreading, we hope to draw from the varied experiences of our speakers to create new connections and ideas in our attendees, better arming them to face the challenges that arise daily. Bruce Beyerly

Store development services manager, Program Management, Americas Store Development Starbucks Coffee
Retired from the Air Force in June 2014 after a 25 year career. Upon retirement, he took a role as store development services manager at Starbucks Coffee Company’s corporate offices. He is now part of a team standing up high-volume stores in busy commuter districts. His life’s passion is to help people solve their professional challenges, including helping our nation’s veterans transition from a life of public service to meaningful work in the private sector.

Chris Lee is an Air Force Captain and former C-17 Aircraft Commander who enjoys studying Philosophy and Theology.

Christopher Maund

Associate Dean of Graduate and Professional Programs St Martin's University
Professor Maund has an eclectic career spanning college teaching, admission, program development, sales, and even newspaper reporting. Students in his classes have ranged from age 16 to 81, proving that everyone can attain a college education.

Evan Hafer

CEO of Black Rifle Coffee Company and a founder of Twistrate LLC
Evan Hafer is the CEO of Black Rifle Coffee Company and a founder of Twistrate LLC, as well as an avid hunter, fisher, gun enthusiast and outdoorsman. He spent the first 14 years of his career serving in the U.S. Army as an infantryman and Special Forces solider (Green Beret), deployed throughout the globe for operations and training and surrounded by amazing coffee and innovators. As an entrepreneur and active investor himself, he wanted to help bring these inventions and passions to life, so he founded Black Rifle Coffee and co-founded TwistRate with Jeff Kirkham. TwistRate was created to be the online fundraising platform for the innovations, ideas and passions of America’s veterans, service members, law enforcement personnel, outdoor enthusiasts and hunting and fishing communities. TwistRate brings groups together to fund, build and make their own American Dream a reality.

Jarred Taylor

Vice President at Black Rifle Coffee Company, Executive Producer at Mat Best MBest11x and President at Article 15 Clothing
After 13 Years in the USAF, he helped to found Article 15 Clothing. Since the inception of Article 15 he has been part of a team that has additionally created their own Coffee and Liquor brand, all three companies value in excess of $3-4M.

Leah Dornfeld

Full time student
Leah is a junior at Western Washington University studying political science with a minor in psychology. She enjoys skiing, hiking, yoga, traveling, and watching the Seahawks. She is the youngest campaign manager to successfully elect a governor into office and looks forward continuing work in politics.

Manuel Martinez

Superintendent, 627th Force Support Squadron
Chief Master Sergeant Manuel A. Martinez serves as the Superintendent, 627th Force Support Squadron, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. Chief Martinez provides leadership, mentorship and empowerment to 90 military and civilian members executing support functions for 155,000 Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Civilians, Retirees and their family members. Chief Martinez provides operational management oversight aimed at achieving mission success—the personal, professional and physical development of Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s military service members and families.

Matt Marshall

CEO AMYNTOR Group, Board of Directors Member PROOF Research, Board of Directors Gratitude Initiative
Former Marine and special operations veteran, clandestine service officer, and successful entrepreneur who is the co-founder and CEO for an international security firm. His passion is to become more involved in philanthropy and share his principles on how to become a great leader.

Melvin Blacketer

Youth Coordinator + athlete + artist
Mel-Lee is Nisqually/Yakama. He currently has careers at the Nisqually Youth & Community Center as youth coordinator (Leadership), the Fabulous Harlem Crowns as a Point Guard, and the Oly-Town Artesians as one of the Goalies. Furthermore he is a Double Bustle Fancy Dancer, he carves, sews, beads, paints, sings and dances, is a storyteller, and more. He uses the secret, 3P's (positive, proactive, and productive), Crucial Conversation, 4H (Adventure Learning), sports, professional coaching/mentoring, psychology, and philosophy to help our youth strive for a better tomorrow and a successful life.

Ruan Brits

First Segeant
Born and raised in South Africa as an Afrikaans Boer. Moved to the United States after completing high school due to the limited opportunities in South Africa and also to get away from the violence. Traveled around the USA for the first year and decided to join the Air Force in June 2000. First trade was in the Transportation Squadron as a General Purpose Mechanic. Retrained in 2006 to Fire Fighting. Relocated in 2014 to JBLM, WA as a Fire Fighter, and now currently serving as a First Sergeant.

Ryan Weed

USAF C17 Pilot and Founder of Positron Dynamics
Self-described as “an explorer at heart, attracted to far-off places and activities that push he limits of human capability”, 31-year old Air Force pilot and antimatter scientist aims to make interstellar travel a reality by developing the world’s first antimatter rocket. He is Co-founder and CEO of Positron Dynamics, the company that is pioneering the use of antimatter in space propulsion.

Tam Dinh

Director, field practicum for social work and Assistant professor, social work
Dr. Tam Dinh is the Director of Field Education and an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Saint Martin’s University. Her teaching and research interests are in the areas of diversity and cross-cultural mental health, military social work, and religion/spirituality. Prior to her academic work, Dr. Dinh worked for more than 10 years with individuals and families in clinical and community settings. This experience ranges from being a case manager at SafeFutures, where she worked with both gang-involved youth and their families to provide holistic and integrated culturally-competent case management services, to her last nonacademic position at the City of Seattle Human Services Department where she engaged at an administrative, organizational, and social policy leadership level. Dr. Dinh lives in Mercer Island, Washington with her husband, Stephen, and three boys, Sebastian, Oliver, and Gabriel.

Tyler Grey

Media Advisor
US Army Special Operations veteran Tyler Grey suffered an injury during a nighttime raid in Sadr City, Baghdad in 2005. After several months in the hospital, losing 50 lbs and enduring over 30 surgeries, Tyler Grey has an unique perspective on life which he uses to help the media and Hollywood to reflect the us military in an accurate and positive light.
