In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Hugh Baillie

Student
Born in Australia, Hugh lived there for 7 years before becoming an expat by moving to Singapore, where he surrounded himself with new age technology in a developed city. He spent a further 5 years of his life there before moving to Malaysia and began attending the International School of Kuala Lumpur. Having always been technologically driven, Hugh aims to discuss the way Artificial Intelligence is heading and how it might have a far greater impact on our life then we might expect.

Jin Lim

Youtuber + Radio DJ
Jin Lim aka Jinnyboy is a Malaysian radio DJ on Hitz.fm and founder of the multi-award wining Malaysian YouTube channel JinnyboyTV. He is now renowned for the short films he puts up on his YouTube channel – which happens to have 580,000 subscribers and counting.

Jingmei Li

Breast Cancer Researcher
A woman in science doing science for women, Jingmei Li seeks to understand the biology of breast cancer. She is currently a postdoctoral research fellow with Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. Her research aim is to identify individuals at an increased risk of breast cancer, to allow the development of preventive interventions such as individualized screening, chemoprophylaxis or surgery, and to ultimately reduce the incidence and mortality of the disease. She is also furthering the currently limited understanding of mammographic density to gain insights into what constitutes dense breasts – one of the strongest risk factors of breast cancer (apart from being female) - and how we can capture information from routine screening mammograms for breast cancer risk prediction. Jingmei is one of the 15 recipients of the 2014 UNESCO-L’Oréal International Fellowships, granted to young women whose promising research projects have a potential impact on human well-being.

Kevin Lim

Architect
Kevin Lim founded openUU in 2011 with Eddy Man Kim and Edward Yujoong Kim. He was born in Melrose, Massachusetts and spent his life in Hong Kong and the United States. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art & Planning and an Associate of Applied Science from Le Cordon Bleu. He has worked in the architectural office of T.A.T. of Boston, Massachusetts and is a chef with experience in the kitchen of Blue Ginger of Wellesley, Massachusetts. As Managing Director, Kevin led, managed, and delivered openUU projects that won four Best-of-Year Awards by Interior Design magazine, and is a winner of Perspective magazine’s 40-under-40 Award.

Marina Mahathir

Human Rights Activist
Marina Mahathir is a writer and human rights activist. For more than 20 years she has written a fortnightly column in the Star about current and social issues. For 12 years she headed the Malaysian AIDS Council working on HIV/AIDS issues in Malaysia and regionally. She is currently on the board of Sisters in Islam which advocates for justice and equality for Muslim women. Marina is also co-producer of the TV series 3R-Respect, Relax and Respond and the founder of the women’s travel website, zafigo.com.

Nishanth Selvalingam

Debater
A wanderer on the path of Life and wanna-be hippie, Nish the Fish spends long periods of time lurking around bookstores and sitting under trees. His favourite things are green tea, John Keats, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and rain. During his senior year of high school, Nish was deeply jaded by the tepid education he was receiving in public school so he stopped going to ‘institutions of learning’ and spent the next one year out of school, traveling South East Asia, debating and trying to make it as a musician. He is now giving high school another try with ISKL and is excited to share everything that he has learned along his travels.

Stanley Chee

Software Engineer
Stanley Chee was professionally trained and worked as a software engineer in Arizona, USA, before coming back to Malaysia. He has served as Chief Technical Officer for OffGamers before joining Gapture Malaysia. Stanley is a member of Mensa Society, The High IQ Society. On his free time, Stanley trains for his triathlon races. He likes to travel with his wife and he is an amateur photographer. Stanley Chee casually writes on his personal blog. He is a public speaker on topics like cloud computing, SaaS, Google AdWords and digital marketing. He is also a certified Google Trainer conducting AdWords courses for Google under ClickAcademy Asia.

Vincent Cee

Musician + Educator
Vince Cee currently teaches orchestras, music theory, and International Baccalaureate Music at the International School of Kuala Lumpur. Vince holds music education degrees from the University of Alaska Fairbanks (B.M.), Arizona State University (M.M.) and the University of Massachusetts Amherst (Ph.D.). Vincent’s research interests range from examining musical activity within institutions to issues in policy, curriculum, and philosophy. Additionally, Vince contributes publications to American String Teacher, and the Music Educator’s Journal. His work has been published in the MIT Press publication, The Leonardo Music Journal. Vince continues to maintain an active performance schedule in Malaysia as a double bassist. Prior to his overseas post Vince performed on a longstanding basis with the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, The Arctic Chamber Orchestra, and The Juneau Symphony. Additionally, Vince taught at The Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, The Fairbanks Suzuki Institute. and many more.

Yasmin Rasyid

Environmentalist + Marine Biologist
Yasmin is a marine biologist by profession, and environmentalist by passion. In her two decades of environmental advocacy in Malaysia, she will share what are some of the urgent actions that need to be taken today for a better tomorrow.
