In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Calgary Avansino

Calgary Avansino moved to London from the West Coast of America in 2000 and soon after, landed the role as the Editor's assistant at British Vogue. Two-and-a-half years later she took the leap and claimed a seat in Vogue's beauty department as Wellbeing Editor, before moving up the ranks over the next 8 years to eventually become the Executive Fashion Director and Digital Project Director - a position she held for five years. In early 2013, Calgary left her full-time position at Vogue to become a Contributing Editor, and balance her career at the publication with an entrepreneurial venture into the world of wellness. From this, her wellness website www.calgaryavansino.com was born, encompassing her tips, recipes and advice for reaching success by living a healthier lifestyle.

Dame Stephanie Shirley

Dame Stephanie Shirley arrived in this country as a child refugee and became a disruptive pioneer. Back in 1962 she founded one of the first tech start-ups as a company of women and took it into co-ownership. After its flotation in 1996, 70 of the staff became millionaires. More recently, in 2001 she founded the Oxford Internet Institute which focuses on the social, economic, legal and ethical aspects of the internet. She was the UK’s first National Ambassador for Philanthropy in 2009/10, and her 2015 TED talk has been seen by over 1.6m people.

Professor Adrian Williams

Professor Williams has had a long interest in Sleep Medicine dating back to research into the sudden infant death syndrome conducted at Harvard University. Subsequently he was appointed at UCLA and developed what was to become the largest sleep service within the Veterans Administration while at the same time co-directing the UCLA Sleep Disorders Centre. He was one of the early clinicians boarded in Sleep Medicine and has published widely in that field including early contributions recognising that systemic hypertension could in part be related to obstructive sleep apnoea. In the UK he has helped develop the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Sleep Disorders Centre into the most active in the U.K. He is a founding member of the Sleep Section of the Royal Society of Medicine, is one of Europe’s few recognised Somnologists, as well as having been awarded the UK’s first Chair in Sleep Medicine.

Professor James Barlow

Professor James Barlow works on innovation in healthcare systems. He wants to improve the way we create and adopt complex healthcare innovations which embrace new technology, infrastructure and services. He is acutely aware of the limits of innovation in healthcare and the need to be realistic about what it can achieve. James has been a Professor of Technology and Innovation Management at Imperial College Business School since 2003, where he combines research, teaching and consulting with collaborators around the world. He is also an Associate Director at Imperial College Health Partners, helping to embed innovations into everyday practice in London. Since 2015 he has been President of the International Academy for Design and Health. James has led many research projects and has published widely.
