In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Bridget Ziraba

Bridget Ziraba is a student at Kololo Senior Secondary School in Kampala Uganda. Bridget envisions a world where girls and women are the strongest movers and shakers in all aspects of leadership and development. Bridget draws her inspiration from current women leaders like USA’s Hilary Clinton, Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga.

Carol Beyanga

Carol Beyanga is the Managing Editor of the daily section of the Daily Monitor newspaper. She has worked at the newspaper for 12 years and has risen through the ranks, from, sub editor to features editor, onto Special Projects editor and she is now the Managing Editor. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from Makerere University and a Master’s degree from Cardiff University in Wales. She does book editing and has worked with publishing houses like Fountain Publishers. Under her leadership role as Special Projects Editor, Carol led efforts that investigated a score of important issues ranging from corporate prostitution to the difficulties people with disabilities face in Uganda.

Hope Nankunda

A Professional teacher and counselor with a wide experience in special needs education, Hope Nankunda has worked with parents and children with learning disabilities in Uganda for 10years. In this TEDx Talk, Hope shares her fulfilling journey of working to understand children with the not so easily noticeable learning disabilities of Dyslexia and Mental Retardation. Hope is the founder and Chairperson of Women of Hope Uganda (WOHU), an organization that promotes development of life skills among persons with disabilities through workshops and trainings in order to promote self-sustainability.

JAQ Deweyi

JAQ Dewey is a Ugandan-based singer and songwriter, influenced by Contemporary African Musicians like Brenda Fassie and Angelique Kidjo. She is also a Radio Presenter at one of Kampala best hit stations KFM where she presents a love and relationships radio show.

Joseph Richard Magongo

Joseph Richard Magongo is a lecturer of Communications and Human Resource Management at Makerere and Cavendish Universities in Uganda. He is also the Executive Director at Major Communication Consultants located in the capital city, Kampala and teaches Public Speaking.

Mer Anyang

Mer Anyang is s singer-songwriter from South Sudan. With her songs, Mer Ayang calls on young people to take part in building their new nation. “Life is not about partying and just being home finally. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done and we have to feel responsible for this.” Mer’s experiences at home and overseas have helped to shape her music. But most of all, she has her father in mind. He was a freedom fighter who died exactly one year before independence on July 9, 2011.

Mildred Apenyo

Mildred Apenyo is a writer and human rights activist with a passion for the safety and wellness of Africa’s women. In 2014 she started FitcliqueAfrica (formerly known as Fitclique256), a social enterprise that opens exclusively women’s gyms, organizes wellness events and creates personal safety curricula for girls and women. FitcliqueAfrica has received the coverage of media houses such as AlJazeera, BBC, Daily Monitor, VOA and NTV for the work it is doing in the fight against shame, body hatred, abuse and other ills of the patriarchy. She writes a column for the Sunday Vision. Mildred was one of the 500 chosen to be part of the inaugural class of the Mandela Washington Fellowship of Young African Leaders in 2014.

Rebecca Rwakabukoza

Rebecca Rwakabukoza is a Global Health Corps fellow working with Action for Community Development in Kasese, Uganda. She self-identifies as a feminist and runs a blog, Mon pi Mon, that celebrates, represents and documents the efforts and issues of Ugandan women.

Susan Nakirijja

Susan Nakirijja is a new artist in Uganda with a background as a church choir vocalist. For a period of time, Susan has inspiringly shared her powerful voice with members of her Church in the Eastern town of Mbale. She is also a Radio Presenter with Step FM/TV , one of the leading media houses in the region. Desirous of positive change, Susan uses her music to inspire and stimulate hard work, peace, unity, equality and love amongst the young, the old and mostly the women.

Victoria Sekitoleko

Victoria Sekitoleko is a former minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries in Uganda. She is the Chairperson of the governing board of Uganda Agribusiness Alliance and Founder and Managing Director of the Uganda Culture Community Centre through which she promotes reading by establishing and supporting both urban and rural community libraries. Previously, Victoria worked as Director of the Food and Agricultural Organization (UN-FAO) representative to China, Mongolia and DPR Korea; FAO representative to Ethiopia for the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community for Africa (ECA); and FAO Sub Regional representative to Eastern and Southern Africa in Zimbabwe. She is a member of the Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Association Limited (UWEAL) and a Rotarian.

Wamunga Nabifo

Frida is an experienced legal practitioner with a strong passion for research and training. She is Co-founder and Vice Chairperson at Eastern Entrepreneurship & Tourism Network in Uganda. Frida provides technical legal advice to promote and protect issues of public interest in an effort to fight all forms of injustice and inequality through the use of legal process and policy analysis. Early 2015, she legally changed her name, abandoning Frida for “Nabifo Wamunga.”
