Theme: Waltzing Wild Waters
June 19th, 2014
About this event
Waltzing, because our “playground” is the city of the Waltz. It symbolizes movement, action and teamwork. And we love to dance!
Wild, because we seek unknown and exciting challenges. We like to think freely and without limits.
Waters, because of the Danube of course! :-) TEDxDonauinsel is a source of inspiration and knowledge, down to earth and open to the world.
Come and join us when we are Waltzing Wild Waters on the Donauinsel!
…certainly knows about wild waters! At the age of six, Andy lost his left arm in a car accident. What seemed to be the end, turned out to be the beginning. He started swimming in rehab and hasn’t stopped since. For a few years now, the 21-year-old is one of Austria’s best disabled athletes. Most recent success: The silver medal in the World Championship of 2013. Besides being a hard-working, professional athlete, he is regularly present on TV, hosting the sports magazine “Ohne Grenzen” and presenting the “Licht ins Dunkel”-Charity on Christmas. At TEDxDonauinsel, Andy will not only tell us about his attitude towards life, but also make clear that we all can achieve so much. “Limits? Don’t exist – only in some people’s heads!”
… explorer of the global innovation-wildlife. A global tracker, community innovator and a poet, Bistra spends her time inspiring, witnessing and supporting courageous steps made by humans. She comes from the small poetry town Struga in Macedonia, combining the passion for art from her father (writer & poet), and the love for numbers from her mother (Female Manager of the year in Macedonia). In 2008, Bistra became part of a youth movement which created today’s most popular web portal in the CEE Region: Mladi Info (www.mladiinfo.com), enabling hundreds of young people to get access to free education, mobility and grants in a fully transparent way. Her passion took her on a journey through Slovenia, Africa and Asia, managing a global community of more than 35.000 young change-makers. At the moment she is managing the Impact Hub Network in Vienna. “In life, you either write things worth reading or do things worth writing about.”
With only 18 years, Renato founded Latin America’s first youth-led initiative which brought together over 30000 Brazilian young activists for a conference to further engage youth activism connected to gender inequality. His work led to the development of national Afro-Brazilian awareness campaigns and the replication of youth leadership trainings all over Brazil and abroad. In 2011, he was invited by former US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, to the Diplomatic Room in Washington D.C., where he gave his first first internationally relevant speech on Brazilian youth participation. At TEDxDonauinsel, Renato will share the impact of a photo-statement idea in bringing positive worldwide change.
… is waltzing through life, proving that passion is all you need. She didn’t even know the meaning of „NGO“ when she started studying Management for NGOs in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Luckily she became interested soon and started volunteering, travelling and working hard for her bachelor’s degree. When Tereza moved to Prague for a master’s program two years ago, she jumped into a unknown field again. Knowing nothing about social entrepreneurship, she founded „Pragulic“ with two schoolmates. Pragulic offers city tours guided by homeless, even 24-hour homeless-experiences, and is a very successful start-up today. „I believe that everyone can make a change if they have a passion and support.“
… is experienced in waltzing out of difficult times When Ekaterina had a personal experience with an eating disorder, she decided to do something against this taboo topic. Wanting to change something for people in the recovery process of an eating disorder, she started the smartphone app Jourvie. Her vision is to make the therapy of eating disorders easier and more efficient for people with anorexia, bulimia or binge eating. The 24-year-old finished her Master in Communication Science in Berlin, where she moved to from Sofia in Bulgaria. Ekaterina will share her personal experience and the progress of her project with us.
… wildly crushes comfort zones. As soon as Till finished high-school he took his education in his own hands. After reading the whole psychology section of the small town library in his city, he set out to personally meet the authors of the books that thrilled him. In 2011 he started to consciously seek out the best psychologists, therapists and coaches all over Europe in order to learn from them. Having the best teachers possible enabled him to give talks throughout Germany at the age of 19, hold a guest lecture at the University of Vienna at age 20 and conduct his own seminars, found a startup and work as a coach at the age of 21. Now he’s helping hundreds of people all over the world to tackle their fears and step out of their comfort zone.
… could also play a waltz for us! Multi-cultural energy live on stage at TEDxDonauinsel! Half-Filipino, half-Belgian singer-songwriter and street musician Joni Sheila recently launched a successful crowd funding campaign to record her debut album. Fun fact: Joni was named after the musician Joni Mitchell, which turned out to be the perfect choice. She also has a communication management degree and applies her communication skills to her music on stage, online and in the streets – She went on a European busking tour in the summer of 2013 and will tell us about her experiences in words and tunes!
