About this event

TEDxNYED, an all-day conference focusing on empowering innovation in education, is being held in New York City on Saturday, March 5, 2011. It will be webcast live here at tedxnyed.com, allowing viewers around the world to join and engage in these ideas worth spreading.

TEDxNYED is independently organized by New York educators. At TEDxNYED, live speakers and TED Talk videos combine to spark deep discussion and connections. TEDxNYED presenters are invited to share their insights and inspire conversations about the future of education. Attendees of the conference participate via networking sessions where they educate one another and, in the spirit of TED, help spread these ideas.

Confirmed Speakers

  • Rinat Aruh
    With her non traditional approach to design and marketing, Rinat has led and collaborated on diverse projects for retail environments, mobile communications, automotive launches, consumer packaging as well as internet start ups. In 2007, Rinat began collaborating with The School at Columbia, integrating design in early education. The diverse projects allow students to redesign everyday objects and teach them the importance of design in everyday life.
  • Steve Bergen
    Steve Bergen is the CIO & Computer Teacher at The Children’s Storefront in Harlem. He was one of two people to start The Original Teaching Company back in 1982 which has offered 5 day Summercore computer workshops and consulting to over 100 schools and almost 3,000 teachers in the United States, Italy, Japan, Sudan and Belgium.
  • Patrick Carman
    Patrick Carman is the author of “The Black Circle,” the fifth installment in the groundbreaking New York Times bestselling multiplatform The 39 Clues™ series which combines books, collectible cards, and an interactive online game where readers become a part of the story. After visiting more than 1,000 schools nationwide, Carman understands what captivates kids and how multimedia fits into their daily lives.
  • Luyen Chou
    Luyen Chou is Senior Vice President at SchoolNet, Inc., the market leader in data-driven decision making systems for schools and school districts. He leads SchoolNet’s consumer and education portal initiatives. Prior to joining SchoolNet, Luyen was the Executive Director of the Center for Integrated Learning and Teaching, and the Associate Head of The School at Columbia University – an independent K-8 laboratory school on the campus of Columbia University in New York City. Luyen played an instrumental role in the design and launch of the new school in the fall of 2003.
  • Brian Crosby
    Brian Crosby, an upper elementary teacher for 29 years, guides the learning in a model technology classroom in Sparks, Nevada. Coming from a background in outdoor education and educational technology, Brian fuses his “at risk” students use of technology with field trips, art, hands-on activities and a problem-based approach, to build their schema of the world while at once connecting them to it.
  • John Ellrodt
    Together, Maria Fico and John Ellrodt, Co-Presidents of Global Writes, have spent over forty years working in the schools and classrooms of New York and other cities. As teachers, as district staff and as technology specialists, they have designed and implemented countless projects and programs to explore the ways that new and emerging technologies enhance and extend education. Now, as consultants and leaders of a growing not-for-profit, they focus on bringing students, teachers, artists and thinkers together in collaborative communities, utilizing technology to cross the borders of time, space, language and age.
  • Maria Fico
    Together, Maria Fico and John Ellrodt, Co-Presidents of Global Writes, have spent over forty years working in the schools and classrooms of New York and other cities.   • Lucy Gray
    Lucy Gray is an educational technology consultant specializing in 21st century initiatives and projects. She holds an M.Ed in Technology in Education from National Louis University and began her career as a primary grade teacher in the Chicago Public Schools. Lucy went on to work at the University Chicago in various capacities at the Laboratory Schools, the Urban Education Institute, and most recently, at the Center for Elementary Mathematics and Science Education.
  • Heidi Hayes Jacobs
    As Executive Director of the Curriculum Mapping Institute and President of Curriculum Designers, Inc., Dr. Jacobs is an internationally recognized expert in the fields of curriculum and instruction. She has served as an education consultant to schools nationally and internationally on issues and practices pertaining to: curriculum mapping, dynamic instruction, and 21st century strategic planning.
  • Dennis Littky
    Dennis Littky is the co-founder and co-director of Big Picture Learning and the Met Center in Providence. He is nationally known for his extensive work in secondary education in urban, suburban, and rural settings, spanning over 40 years. As an educator, Dennis has a reputation for working up against the edge of convention and out of the box, turning tradition on its head and delivering concrete results.
  • Morley
    Composer and singer Morley from New York City breathes sensuality into activism with her worldly lyrical stance. Morley considers social and global activism an integral element of her music and uses its medicine as a tool for dialogue facilitation when she works with teenagers from domestic and international conflict zones.
  • Alan November
    Alan November is recognized internationally as a leader in education technology. He began his career as an oceanography teacher and dorm counselor at an island reform school for boys in Boston Harbor. He has been a director of an alternative high school, computer coordinator, technology consultant, and university lecturer. As practitioner, designer, and author, Alan has guided schools, government organizations and industry leaders as they plan to improve quality with technology.
  • Stacey Murphy
    Stacey Murphy is the founder of BK Farmyards, a decentralized urban farming network based in Brooklyn. She is an architect and engineer and has spent the last two years managing high-yield micro-farms and teaching sustainable agriculture to teens. Her architecture experience has led to theorizing on how best to build a local and just food system.
  • Will Richardson
    A parent of two middle school-aged children, Will Richardson has been blogging about the intersection of social online learning networks and education for the past 10 years at Weblogg-ed.com. He is a former public school educator for 22 years, and is a co-founder of Powerful Learning Practice, a unique long-term, job-embedded professional development program that has mentored over 3,500 teachers worldwide in the last four years.
  • Douglas Rushkoff
    Winner of the first Neil Postman award for Career Achievement in Public Intellectual Activity, Douglas Rushkoff is an author, teacher, and documentarian who focuses on the ways people, cultures, and institutions create, share, and influence each other’s values. He teaches media studies at NYU and the New School University, serves as technology columnist for The Daily Beast, and lectures around the world.
  • Gary Stager
    Since 1982, Gary Stager, PhD, an internationally recognized educator, speaker and consultant, has helped learners of all ages on six continents embrace the power of computers as intellectual laboratories and vehicles for self-expression. He led professional development in the world’s first laptop schools (1990), has designed online graduate school programs since the mid-90s, is a collaborator in the MIT Media Lab’s Future of Learning Group and a member of the One Laptop Per Child Foundation’s Learning Team.
  • Samona Tait
    Dr. Samona Tait became Head of School at the Bronx Preparatory Charter School, a public charter school serving students in grades 5-12 in the South Bronx, in July 2007. Prior to becoming Bronx Prep’s head of school, Samona served the children of New York City’s public schools as a principal and local instructional superintendent.
  • Homa Tavangar
    Homa Sabet Tavangar is the author of the widely-acclaimed, Random House release, Growing Up Global: Raising Children to Be At Home in the World, named a “Best New Parenting Book” by Scholastic magazine, and hailed by national education and business leaders and media ranging from the Washington Post.com, Chicago Tribune and Boston Globe to PBS, Rodale, Parents Magazine, FoxNews.com, and the Huffington Post.
